Nocturne is honored to host Matthew Venus, author of Ensouling the Effigy: The Witch’s Art of Inspirited Objects, for an intimate hands-on workshop in Salem.

This class inaugurates Hill House Parlour, Nocturne’s new creative event space just across the street from our shop.

The workshop is presented in collaboration with Matthew and centers directly on the teachings and practices from his book.

About Matthew Venus

Matthew Venus is an artist, folk magician, and traditional witch whose craft is rooted in animism and relationship with spirit.

For over two decades, he has shared his teachings with students around the world through classes exploring witchcraft and folk magical traditions.

He is the owner and lead apothecary of Spiritus Arcanum and co founder of the Salem Witchcraft and Folklore Festival.

Nocturne is honored to host him for this intimate gathering in Salem.

The Workshop

Crafting a Protection Maumet

Drawing from Ensouling the Effigy, this immersive class guides participants through the creation of a protection maumet — a spirit vessel crafted to serve as a personal guardian.

Under Matthew’s guidance, students will:

• Craft a cloth effigy or poppet
• Work with botanical and mineral correspondences
• Engage in spiritual conjuring and intention setting
• Learn techniques for magical enlivening and activation

By the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with a completed and awakened maumet to take home as a protective spirit ally.

All supplies are included with your ticket.
No prior experience is necessary.

This is an intimate gathering with limited seating.

Your class ticket also includes admission to Nocturne Book Club that evening at 6:30 PM, held at Nocturne (18 Front Street).

During Nocturne Book Club, Matthew will:

• Discuss the writing and creation of Ensouling the Effigy
• Share insight into his magical practice
• Answer questions
• Sign copies of the book

This portion of the evening is conversational and community centered. A chance to sit in circle with the author and explore the deeper currents of his work.
