A classical landscape painting from Salem Visual Art depicts people and animals near a river with small waterfalls, surrounded by trees, hills, and distant buildings under a soft, golden sky—perfect for Celebrating 400.

A Series of Monthly Lectures by Jim McAllister
At the historic Hawthorne Hotel in Salem`

Wednesday, May 20
11 a.m. repeated at 7 p.m.

“Beyond Benson: A Salem Visual Art Potpourri”

While best known to the art world as the home of the noted Impressionist painter and printmaker Frank Weston Benson, Salem’s visual arts history is full of many other delightful surprises.

Join Jim for this colorful, heavily-illustrated talk in which he will introduce:

  • A well known painter, fresh off five summers in Monet’s Giverny, who captures her new Salem surroundings on canvas and participates in the artistic life of her adopted city;
  • The artists behind some of Salem’s best known historical paintings;
  • A trio of painters with connections to Nathaniel Hawthorne;
  • The Salem – Provincetown artist who also made important contributions in a number of other, unrelated fields of endeavor – and the gossip columns;
  • And images of some rarely seen Salem-related art works in public and private collections!

To reserve or for more information contact Jim at culturecorner@gmail.com. Please include the lecture time (11 a.m. or 7 p.m.) you prefer.

Admission $20. Lecture attendees who choose to dine at the hotel receive 20 % discount on meals (excluding alcoholic drinks).
