About this Event

The Revolution Ball is a colonial dress/black tie evening of live music, dancing, food, and drinks. The event celebrates the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Leslie’s Retreat from the Salem gunpowder raid of 1775.

In February of 1775, Colonel Alexander Leslie and his British regulars were sent to raid the gunpowder and cannon stores of Salem. On their way through Marblehead and Salem, an alarm was raised and townsfolk and local militia responded in large numbers to impede Leslie and his soldiers. Rather than the confrontation ending in violence, collaboration and diplomacy won the day, thanks to local minister Rev. Thomas Barnard, Captain John Felt, Colonel David Mason, and Colonel Leslie.

The evening’s events will begin with period drinks, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and music. Period dancing will commence in the ballroom, led by Commonwealth Vintage Dancers. Local reenactors will be present, both to take photos with and to participate in the evening’s festivities.

Guests are welcome to wear either colonial costume or black tie attire.
