SUMMARY:Sunday at the Nut House
DESCRIPTION:Reception + Gallery Talk: Sunday\, September 27\, 3-5PM \nSunday at the Nut House celebrates a brief period in the development of three artists who came together with the renowned artist Maurice Sendak on Sundays in Ridgefield\, Connecticut\, in 2004-7 to draw from the model. They were brought together by Sendak\, who wanted an occasional break from working long hours in his studio on such projects as the illustrations and sets for the opera Brundibar. He gave Jonathan Weinberg the task of forming the drawing group. \nAt the time\, Weinberg\, who is both a painter and an art historian\, and his husband\, Nick Boshnack\, lived next door to Sendak in a house Sendak owned. This house\, where these first drawing sessions took place\, was affectionately known as “the Nut House\,” not because of the mental capacity of its inhabitants\, but because squirrels frequently dropped acorns on its roof. Weinberg invited Marc McChesney\, a young local artist whom he had briefly mentored\, to join the group. Marc\, in turn\, suggested that his best friend\, the illustrator Jamison Odone\, come to draw with them as well. The quartet was augmented by Herman\, Maurice Sendak’s enormous and beautiful German shepherd\, who provided emotional support. \nThe paintings\, drawings\, and posters in the exhibition provide a sense not only of what the work of the drawing sessions was like\, but also an introduction to the art the four artists made in the years before\, during\, and after the Nut House days. \nSunday at the Nut House was originally conceived and organized by participating artists Jonathan Weinberg and Jamison Odone in 2025 for the Stephanie Ann Roper Gallery at Frostburg State University. The exhibition’s iteration for the Montserrat Galleries is organized in collaboration with Lynne Cooney\, Director of Exhibitions and Galleries. \nImage: Jonathan Weinberg\, Maurice Sendak Drawing\, 2007. SUMMARY:Masako Kamiya: Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Paul M. Scott Library \nSeptember 30 – October 28\n\n\nOpening Reception: September 30\, 11am\, Library\nFaculty in Conversation artist talk: October 21\, 11am\, H101 \n“Outside my studio\, I am often a spectator and a passive participant in endless flickering images on a digital screen. My eyes are infiltrated with intense short-wavelength blue light. Therefore\, facing a painting on paper in the studio\, I suddenly crave the paint’s color\, opacity\, weight\, and a sense of reciprocity. On the grid linear mesh\, I laboriously map my marks\, and they remind me of my hand movement and their touch on the surface.   \nThe diminutive paint marks can tirelessly repeat as they signify countless cells and fibers that make up my body. Each painting is a vessel that carries a sense of weight\, gravity\, and balance\, which reflects my complex sensory experience.” \n

SUMMARY:Isamu Noguchi: "I am not a designer" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Explore a major retrospective that offers a new perspective on the design work of Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988). \n\n\n\n\nAs one of the 20th century’s most critically acclaimed and genre-blurring artists\, Noguchi created a remarkable design legacy encompassing sculpture\, lighting\, furniture\, ceramics and designs for public spaces such as gardens\, playgrounds and plazas. \nOrganized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta\, Isamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer” shines a light on the artist’s limitless creativity and social consciousness. Discover the evolution of Noguchi’s design work\, particularly the way he created environments through theatrical set design\, furniture and inclusive public spaces — all of which were intentionally designed to improve the way people lived. Many of his designs remain incredibly popular\, such as the celebrated coffee table and Akari light sculptures that you may recognize in stores today. As Noguchi once said\, “Everything is sculpture. Any material\, any idea without hindrance born into space\, I consider sculpture.” \nNoguchi also excelled at working collaboratively and forming close relationships with other creative professionals\, particularly with modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham\, American architect R. Buckminster Fuller and Romanian sculptor and painter Constantin Brâncuși. These fruitful creative relationships are also highlighted within the exhibition. \nFollow along on social media using #PEMNoguchi
