SUMMARY:SALEM ART GALLERY OPEN CALL FOR ART 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Salem Art Gallery is seeking artwork inspired by the historical concept of Witch Hunts and moral panics. Any work of qualifying media exploring themes of fear\, persecution\, and societal hysteria will be considered for this exhibit. \nA Witch Hunt is a campaign directed against a person or group holding unorthodox or unpopular views. “The Satanic Panic was a period lasting from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s characterized by a series of modern-day witch trials. “Satan hunters\,” emboldened by the rise of the New Right in 1980\, persecuted hundreds of day care operators. Their actions propelled a Satanic conspiracy theory into the cultural mainstream and has had a lasting impact on conservative politics….Satanic conspiracism created a type of political capital that the New Right exploited to other its enemies and advance its causes.” (Source: https://digitalcommons.memphis.edu/etd/3521/) As we enter a new era of conspiracy and fear\, this exhibit is more appropriate than ever. \nIf your artwork is chosen you will have the opportunity to display and sell your work in the Salem Art Gallery located within the Satanic Temple HQ. SUMMARY:Cry Innocent Auditions 2026
DESCRIPTION:Hello!  Thank you for your interest in performing with History Alive\, Inc.  Read on for more information about Cry Innocent and our audition process. \nTo audition\, please submit this form by 11:59 pm on April 19th. \nOur company: History Alive\, Inc. is currently casting for our show Cry Innocent: The People vs. Bridget Bishop. Cry Innocent runs every fall\, and it’s the longest running play North of Boston. \nHere’s more company info if you’re curious: \nhttps://www.historyalivesalem.com/ \n“Not all of Salem’s witchiness is silly…the play Cry Innocent: The People Versus Bridget Bishop\, in which the audience may question the accused\, is educational and beautifully performed.” – The New York Times \n\nThe show: Bridget Bishop was the first person executed in the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Cry Innocent draws directly from the text of Bridget’s examination after she was accused of witchcraft and taken into custody.  We present witness testimony\, and audience members may ask their own questions of Bridget\, the witnesses\, and one of the magistrates (judges) who presided in 1692.

SUMMARY:Salon Show 2026 CALL FOR ART
DESCRIPTION:Artists\, you’ve come to the right place! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you for your interest in participating in Essex Art Center’s sixth annual Salon Show. \nThe Salon Show is a yearly exhibition that fills Essex Art Center’s walls with work by artists from Lawrence\, New England\, and beyond. We celebrate the breadth of talent in our community\, and some work is for sale. This year’s show will take place from Saturday\, July 11 to Saturday\, September 12\, 2026. The opening reception will coincide with Fiesta en la calle\, the Center’s yearly free block party on Saturday\, July 11\, from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. \nWe hope you will submit your best work! A good rule of thumb for choosing which piece(s) to offer is that if you’re excited about it\, the jury and collectors likely will be too. If you choose to have your work up for sale\, proceeds will be split 50/50 between the Center and the artist who sells their work. Each sale allows Essex Art Center to expand our programming\, offer more discounts\, and provide greater access to meaningful art experiences! \nPlease carefully read our Salon Show rules below before you submit your artwork. If you have any questions or concerns\, please email info@essexartcenter.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat you need to know + do: \n\n\n\nExciting news! This year’s Salon Show + Art Sale will take place on two floors at Essex Art Center and Rapscallion Brick Oven Pizza + Brewery. \n\n\nArtists must submit at least two pieces to guarantee that at least one will be included in the Salon Show. The deadline is Sunday\, May 3rd\, at midnight. Please fill out the submission form below. If you choose to sell your work\, you will need to fill out a W9 and upload it with your submission form. \n\n\nThe photo you include in your submission is what will be listed on our website if your work is for sale so please make sure to take a good photo. \n\n\nWorks priced under $250 tend to sell best. We aim to present a high-quality exhibition and ask that you submit your best work. A good rule of thumb is that if you’re excited about your work\, the jury and potential buyers will likely be excited about it\, too. We encourage all different mediums of art\, but we will not accept AI artwork. \n\n\nIf your artwork is a wall piece\, it must be ready for hanging (Framed or wired). If your artwork or frame is warped\, damaged\, or scratched\, we will not accept your work. \n\n\nBeing part of the Salon Show means your artwork must be exhibited during the Salon Show dates: Saturday\, July 11 – Saturday\, September 12\, 2026. We cannot remove your artwork early. \n\n\nAny accepted artwork that does not sell during the Salon Show + Art Sale MUST be picked up at Essex Art Center\, located at 56 Island Street in Lawrence\, MA\, between Monday\, September 14 and Saturday\, September 19\, 2026. Failure to do so means forfeiting the rights to your artwork to Essex Art Center.

SUMMARY:Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Born in Greenbush\, New York in 1844\, Lewis became the first sculptor of Black and Indigenous (Mississauga) descent to achieve international recognition. Beginning her career in Boston in 1863\, she traveled to Rome in 1866 to join the leading American sculptors of her generation\, breaking international\, racial and gender barriers. “Sometimes the times were dark and the outlook was lonesome\, but where there is a will\, there is a way\,” Lewis recalled in 1878. “That is what I tell my people whenever I meet them\, that they must not be discouraged\, but work ahead until the world is bound to respect them for what they have accomplished.” \nFollowing her death in 1907\, Lewis’ legacy endured in Black communities\, yet her contribution to American sculpture has largely been underrecognized. Some of her great masterpieces were rediscovered decades later\, while others remain lost today. \nHer vivid\, naturalistic stone sculptures feature abolitionists and social reformers\, engage with Indigenous identity and give new life to religious and mythological figures. \nDiscover the first museum exhibition of its kind to gather the full range of Lewis’s art alongside works by her contemporaries and the generations of artists she influenced. Together these 115 objects foreground Lewis’s life and work within her worlds and reveal her true mastery of marble. \nFollow along on social media using #EdmoniaLewisatPEM
