SUMMARY:Belongings: Calling Lynn Home Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Lynn has been shaped over thousands of years by the people who have called this place home. \nWhile Lynn is well-known as a center of industry in the nineteenth century\, there are many lesser-known stories about the people and communities that have formed this city. Today\, Lynn is the largest city in Essex County with over 100\,000 residents\, all with their own experiences\, struggles\, and joys. From indigenous history to modern immigration\, this exhibition explores dynamic periods in Lynn’s past and present\, creating a fuller picture of this vibrant place and its residents. \nOver the course of a year\, museum staff invited the Lynn community to contribute stories and artifacts to build this exhibition with us\, resulting in exciting new relationships\, collaborations\, and partnerships. There are many more stories that have yet to be told\, and this space will change to include more over time. \nWhether you were born and raised in Lynn or this is your first time visiting\, you belong here\, too. What’s your Lynn story? \nThis exhibit is permanent and is located in our second-floor galleries.

SUMMARY:The Plight of Loyalists on the Eve of Independence
DESCRIPTION:Alexander Cain examines the untold stories of American Loyalist families driven from their homes\, exiled\, and forgotten by history.\n\n\nThis lecture\, presented by historian Alexander Cain\, examines the often-overlooked experiences of American Loyalists from New England\, including those from Essex County\, during the Revolutionary War. It examines how unwavering loyalty to the Crown led to the loss of homes\, freedom\, and security for numerous families. Drawing on original petitions and firsthand accounts\, the presentation traces the harrowing flight of Loyalists from so-called “patriot” mobs and Committees of Safety. The discussion further explores the severe hardships endured by Loyalist families\, including those from Salem\, who sought refuge with the British army\, facing starvation\, violations of civil liberties\, and exile. The lecture also highlights the resilience that enabled these individuals to persevere in the face of such adversity. \n \nAlexander Cain\, JD\, has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\, and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery. Currently\, he is in the process of writing his upcoming book\, “For God’s Sake Fire!” – The Massachusetts Militia System on the Eve of the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, which is anticipated to be released in 2027. \nAlex is the Executive Director of Apprenticeship Pathways at North Shore Community College. He resides in Massachusetts with his wife\, Paula\, and they have two adult children\, John and Abigail. The fact that they are named after John and Abigail Adams is purely a coincidence. \nWhile admission to this event is free\, space is limited; registration is strongly encouraged. \n\n\n\nThis program is part of the Conflict & Community: Salem\, Essex County\, and the American Revolution lecture series. This series is a partnership between Essex Heritage and Salem Maritime National Historical Park and highlights the unique role of Essex County communities during the American Revolution. SUMMARY:Knowing Nature: Stories of the Boreal Forest Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Home to 3.7 million people\, 85 species of animals\, 32\,000 species of insects and 2 billion migratory birds\, the boreal forest spans nearly the entire Northern Hemisphere\, just below the Arctic Circle\, and makes up one of the world’s last remaining stretches of true wilderness. \nDiscover the biodiversity and global importance of our northernmost forests through first-person stories\, commissioned objects\, interactive experiences and exquisite photography and videography. \nThe boreal forest is critical to the health of our entire planet. It helps regulate Earth’s climate\, is the world’s largest land biome\, is a critical water reservoir and holds two to three times as much carbon as tropical forests. \nThis timely bilingual exhibition (in English and Spanish) weaves together themes of climate change\, Indigenous perspectives and the relationship between people and nature while taking audiences on a learning journey that starts with curiosity\, builds empathy and leads to action. This family-friendly exhibition is located in The Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center and is part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative. \nFollow along on social media using #PEMKnowingNature

SUMMARY:East India Marine Hall Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Reflect upon the global perspective that has made Salem such a distinctive city as we mark the 200th anniversary of East India Marine Hall. \nExplore several hundred fascinating objects inside the historic hall\, representing a sampling of the many collections that were displayed in the museum during its earliest years. This installation gives voice to early collectors\, trading partners and museum visitors about these objects — with some accounts extracted from records in the museum’s vast archive — and shares perspectives from a range of people living today. These captivating stories and works that reflect local and global history\, as well as the impact of maritime trade\, recenter East India Marine Hall as the heart of the museum. From its inception\, this space and the objects in it have elicited empathy\, curiosity and wonder and transported visitors to places around the world. \nThis project has been made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. Major support is provided by Mr. Ulf B. Heide\, Tim and Joanie Ingraham\, Alex Ingraham\, and Sam Ingraham. Generous support has been provided by Haven Trust\, Mr. and Mrs. James B. Hawkes\, Mr. and Mrs. Howard B. Hodgson Jr.\, Angus and Leslie Littlejohn\, Chip and Susan Robie\, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart W. Pratt\, Katie Huddleson and Alan Kraning\, Edward A. Studzinski and Anne G. SUMMARY:Beyond the Broom: Salem Short Films Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Discover more than 60 mini-documentaries by local filmmakers.\n\n\n\n\nThese films honor the lesser-known stories of Salem and offer a behind-the-scenes look at what makes this city so remarkable. \nProduced over the course of more than seven years by Perry Hallinan\, Joe Cultrera and many other filmmakers for presentation at the Salem Film Fest\, these short films span topics from breakfast at Red’s to the annual Black Picnic at Salem Willows. For longtime Salem residents\, these stories might spark nostalgia; for new residents and tourists\, they illuminate Salem’s vibrant communities\, bygone businesses and traditions that local filmmakers have long worked to record and preserve. Beyond the Broom showcases the vibrant community of Salem\, one with an identity that extends beyond its witch trials history \nThis exhibition is part of the 2026 celebration of Salem 400+\, which commemorates the quadricentennial of the city’s settlement while honoring the preexisting Indigenous community. The initiative aims to engage the Salem community and ensure a vibrant and sustainable city for generations to come. \nFollow along on social media using #BeyondtheBroom
