In your words… Tell us about your organization, business, initiative.
The International Women’s Writing Guild (IWWG) is a literary community for women writers. The Guild was founded in 1976. As a women’s writing guild, we are culturally diverse. From the beginning, we’ve represented women from many backgrounds. We create a space where all women writers feel welcome, inspired, and empowered by skills, resources, and mentoring. Now, after 40 years of enriching women writers’ lives, we are still growing and changing with the times. More than ever, we’re committed to empowering women writers with innovative and diverse professional resources, mentoring, and support. We have a robust membership, a signature summer conference which will be held in Beverly, MA (at Endicott College) in 2020, and a dynamic and growing list of established regional conferences.
Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do? Share your passions for your business, initiative, organization.
I am the Executive Director of the Guild. I am a Bostonian and love the North Shore! I have also lived around the country and abroad and embrace the global appeal of the Guild. I am passionate about supporting women’s voices. The women at the Guild – our Board, faculty, members and supporters – inspire and support me and all women writers.
What role do you think your business plays in supporting a more creative community?
The Guild supports the creativity and voices of women. Today more than ever, we need to hear women’s voices and be inclusive and globally aware. Creative communities bring innovation, energy and connectivity.
What was the last book you read that made an impact on you?
I read Catherine Chung’s “The Tenth Muse.” It impacted me because it illustrated the challenges some women have due to their identity or interests. There is strength and beauty in the characters and storyline.
What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you our your business?
I speak several languages including Chinese! I love languages and culture and this is where I find so much synergy with my fellow women writers at the Guild. There are so many cultures, identities and perspectives represented and I love the challenge and inspiration.
