I’m Noel Pichardo. As an artist I go by Leone. I have a combined 7 years of experience in photo and video production. I started my love for Film at RAW Art Works in Lynn, a nonprofit art therapy institution. There I fostered my love of photography and the digital arts, cultivating it into a career in the Boston film industry. A majority of my experience comes from working actively in Boston and slowly spreading all over Essex county. In recent years I worked on part of the documentary for the MLK Jr. monument on Boston Common, as well as the documentary for the official Obama portraits that toured briefly to the MFA. My films have seen successes, like screenings at the MFA, PEM, Princeton University, Providence Film Festival, as well as awards such as first place in the “Experimental Film” category of the Philadelphia Film Festival and a nomination at the Toronto Film Festival.
What is the last thing you read, watched, or listened to that had an impact on you?
“Usually when we hear or read something new, we just compare it to our own ideas. If it is the same, we accept it and say that it is correct. If it is not, we say it is incorrect. In either case, we learn nothing.”
Thich Nhat Hanh, The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation
What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you or your business?
My art has helped me understand hardship, it’s taught me to come out on the other side. To comprehend why life challenges us, and how we can grow. Even with the journey I’ve gone through and all the support I have behind me, I have yet to find a creative way to come to grips with my permanent heart condition. Known as Rheumatic Heart disease, I was diagnosed at 11. Rheumatic Heart disease in my case is when two of the valves in the heart known as the Mitral and Aortic valves that pump blood to the body aren’t able to keep blood from entering the same chamber it comes out of. This leaves the leaflets or doors in the heart unable to close properly to keep the blood from reentering. I’ve had two surgeries now as of June of 2018, but unfortunately there is no cure, no amount of writing, photography, art-making that can cure me of this affliction. The most recent surgery just being a band-aid that in theory should last me about 10 years, give or take, before I have to go back to the operating room. Honestly though, I don’t foresee any dark clouds in my future, only turbulent tides and new experiences to be had and to grow from.
