About Fall Into Balance Edition
Sevening (v.): the act of showing up after seven(ish), for your people, your community, and honestly yourself, somewhere in Essex County. New to sevening? I was. The stars have charted the full definition in our About Time Edition. The rest of you are already in alignment.
Oh hey there again, Essex County. Well, well, well. Look whom the cosmos dragged back in. Oh yes, my starlings, it is I, me, your friendly neighborhood and county baby king, Sal Stysse, returning to the (s)evening shift in a velvet cape, a contour sharper than a tarot reading, and celestial rings on every single finger.
Last time I held the mic, the sun was showing off at the solstice. This week, the universe hits pause: the autumnal equinox, when day and night split the sky fifty-fifty like two queens sharing one dressing room. Equal light, equal dark, equal drama.
And yeong? Out of orbit again, starlings. Apparently the equinox is “a hinge in the cosmic door,” and yeong refused to get caught on the wrong side of it. Word on the street is the last sighting of yeong was at twilight with Star Gayzer, off to weigh the day against the night on some cosmic scale only the two of them can see. Per said something about “equal parts light and dark, just like me,” and real talk? We felt that in our chakras. Per life is a whole horoscope, and we are simply reading along.
So the warlock is in. The tarot is shuffled, the candles are lit, and the crystal ball has been freshly polished. I gazed deep into it, and here’s what the mists revealed: ghosts at a cidery, a charm necklace with commitment issues, a comedy séance in a speakeasy cellar, three guitar gods, a haunted stained glass window, a wheel of dark Disney destiny, a mad king, a whole patch of glass pumpkins, a 90s prom redo, and a very young Anthony Bourdain. Oh my starlings, the cards have never been this busy.
The dark half of the year officially takes the throne now, my starlings. Nights get longer, sweaters get chunkier, and the veil gets thinner by the minute. The scales and the calendar are in perfect agreement this week. Let’s not keep either one waiting.

Sass Craft Society’s First Day of Fall Class at 6:00 PM
The scales tip tonight, my starlings, and Far From the Tree is where the veil gets its first seasonal thinning. Sass Craft Society invites you to greet autumn the only way a proper coven should: by crafting ghosts with your two hands and telling ghost stories until the cider starts whispering back. Summer’s sun surrenders, the dark half of the year takes the throne, and you get to be in the room when it happens. No crystal ball required, just a willingness to be properly haunted. Boo, oh my, the equinox is serving and so is the cider.

Trend Lab: Abacus Bead Carabiner Charm Necklace at 6:00 PM
Your fortune teller sees jewelry in your future, and it is suspiciously affordable. EOS Designs Studio opens its Marblehead cottage for Trend to Treasure, the monthly series where boutique looks get recreated without the boutique markup. This month’s conjuring is an abacus bead necklace with a front-facing carabiner clasp, so charms can be swapped faster than a queen changes wigs between numbers. Glass, ceramic, pearls, gemstones, shell: the bead wall is a treasure vault. Trendy, versatile, and handmade by you? That’s the kind of magic that never goes out of style.
Comedy Night with Zack Lyman at 7:00 PM
Descend, my starlings, into the cellar beneath The Bell Inn & Tavern, the North Shore’s oldest speakeasy, where the walls have kept secrets since the 1800s. Tonight they get a new one: Zack Lyman, a national touring comedian with The Big Laugh and his hour special Zen Comedy on Amazon Prime, plus his newest release, Delightful. He’s been named a Comic to Watch, and starlings, the cards agree. Tickets are limited, so book ahead before the spirits claim every seat. Order a drink, grab a bite, and let the high-energy chaos of this underground laugh séance possess you completely.

Guitar Monsters at 8:00 PM
Three planets are aligning at The Cut in Gloucester, and each one shreds. New England Music Hall of Famer Jon Butcher, Grammy-nominated Boston Music Hall of Famer Johnny A., and REO Speedwagon’s Dave Amato share one stage for a full-throttle guitar showcase. My tarot deck pulled the Tower, the Chariot, and the Star, which I’m reading as riffs, speed, and pure rock royalty. Tonight the strings do the spellcasting and the amps do the summoning. This one is 18+ with a positive ID, so bring your license along with your leather. Prepare to have your chakras realigned at maximum volume.

Hey Boo! Resin Faux Stained Glass Workshop at 6:00 PM
Hey boo! Yes, you, the one lingering near the tap list. Granite Coast Brewing and Create and Escape DIY Workshops are serving a guided haunted faux stained glass workshop, where resin plays the role of glass and nobody has to go near a kiln. Every supply, material, and instruction is included, so arrive with nothing but your aura. Your ticket covers a beer, hard seltzer, or non-alcoholic sip, because every ghost glows brighter with a drink in hand. The crystal ball shows a luminous haunting hanging in your window by October. Pour, swirl, and let the light shine through, starling.
Movie Roulette: Dark Disney with VCR2 at 7:00 PM
Fate spins a wheel tonight, and for once it isn’t mine. Salem Horror Fest brings its fall program to the North Andover Historical Society, where VCR2 hosts a family-friendly screening decided entirely by chance. One brave audience member spins a wheel of six dark Disney films, and whichever title the universe selects plays on the big screen. Consider it cinematic divination. General admission is $15, with $5 tickets for NAHS members and students showing a current ID. Bring the kids, bring your inner villain, and trust the wheel, starlings. Destiny has impeccable taste, and she absolutely loves a dramatic reveal.
King Lear: Cambridge American Stage Tour at 7:00 PM
A king, three daughters, and a kingdom split three ways: starlings, I’ve read this chart before, and it never ends in brunch. Cinema Salem hosts the Cambridge (UK) American Stage Tour for its first US performances of Shakespeare’s King Lear. The aging monarch divides his realm, the two eldest sisters mock him and break their promises, and Lear stumbles into madness with only his faithful Fool for company. It’s the original family drama, served with a crown and a storm. Settle in for a powerful UK production, a 15-minute intermission, and a reminder to always read the fine print, starlings.

Salem Glass Pumpkin Patch at 11:00 AM
Every fairy godmother in the cosmos wishes she had this patch. North Shore Glass School brings its Salem Glass Pumpkin Patch to Salem Common for year three, with hundreds of one-of-a-kind glass pumpkins handmade on historic Gallows Hill. This year the harvest grows wilder: the Salem Glass Witch Ball Co. debuts its first collection, and guest makers Gold Coast Glass, Vesper Glassworks, Sins and Scents, and Wicked Ghost Hunters join the fun. It’s free, part of the Haunted Happenings Marketplace, running 11 AM to 8 PM, returning the next day until 6. Your pumpkin is out there, starlings. Claim it.
90s Karaoke Prom at 8:00 PM
Tease the bangs, crimp the hair, and dust off that slip dress, because Bit Bar is throwing a 90s Karaoke Prom and my third eye is seeing frosted tips everywhere. Salem’s arcade bar trades the gym bleachers for a mic and a spotlight, so every boy band ballad and girl power anthem gets its coronation. Did you miss your first prom? Did your prom miss you? The stars say this is your redemption arc. Grab a date, a friend, or your fabulous reflection, and belt it like the millennium depends on it. Prom royalty will be decided by vibes alone.

Tony (film) at 6:00 PM
Sevenings signs off the week at The Cabot in Beverly, where the screen serves up a young legend before the legend. Tony follows a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain to Provincetown, where he stumbles into the glorious chaos of a restaurant kitchen and a summer that changes everything. Dominic Sessa, Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, and Antonio Banderas round out a stacked cast hotter than a line cook’s flat top. Tickets run $13.50 to $16.50, a small offering to the cinema gods. Consider it a reminder from the stars: every great destiny starts with one messy, delicious season. Bon appétit, my hungry starlings.
Consider this your sign from the stars, written in candle smoke across the longest nights yet to come. Equinox energy is all about balance this week, so give the light and the dark equal love, and give your sevening the drama it deserves.
That’s just a sliver of the constellations I read for what’s sevening under this week’s harvest sky. The full galaxy lives on the calendar, and my starlings, it’s the whole Essex County universe and beyond. Go chart your own course through it. CC members, if your event deserves its own spot in the sky, submit a member marketing request and let us help you shine. The newsletter is still the easiest way to never miss a sevening, so get on it before the moon swings back around. And both socials, @creativecollectivema and @creativecollectiveexplores. The cosmos insist on both, yes both, my starlings.
Until next week, Essex County. The nights get longer from here, and the best part? That just means more sevening. Stay balanced. Stay sevening. You know where to find us. We’re everywhere, and so are the stars.
– star and moons to you all, Sal Stysse, forecasting the fates and the festivities, from the (s)evening shift, out.
