Free guided tour of The Gables for Peabody residents on March 3
SALEM — The House of the Seven Gables is pleased to invite residents from Peabody to a free guided tour of the celebrated mansion made famous by Salem author Nathaniel Hawthorne and his novel, “The House of the Seven Gables.” Peabody’s Community Day is set for Sunday, March 3.
The House of the Seven Gables is one of six historic properties that make up the National Historic Landmark at 115 Derby St. in Salem. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s birthplace is one of those properties. The Museum campus and gift shop are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Gables’ tour times are scheduled throughout the day. Residents and their family members are asked to show valid identification to take advantage of the free offer.
Those taking the house tour will enjoy hearing some of the dramatic stories of two prosperous merchant families, the Turners and Ingersolls. They resided in the house before it was purchased and restored by philanthropist Caroline Emmerton. The house is noted for its display of some of the earliest Georgian-style interiors. Pieces owned by Hawthorne and his family are on display in the house, as well as furnished mid-18th-century rooms. Last year the mansion celebrated its 350th anniversary.
The House of the Seven Gables is located at 115 Derby Street in Salem, Massachusetts. Some onsite parking is available.
