Community Catalysts: Celebrating Juneteenth and Empowering Black Business Excellence

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, which is the day enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a day rooted in delayed justice, hard-won freedom, and the resilience required to keep moving forward. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom isn’t just a date in history or another holiday, it’s something we keep building, together, every time we choose to show up for one another. That spirit of resilience is exactly what we’re honoring.

Love is greater than hate. That’s not just a sentiment – it’s a call to action. And it shows up in the choices we make every single day: when we walk into a local bakery on a Tuesday morning, when we share a neighbor’s small business on our social media, when we choose to spend our dollars in ways that reflect our deepest values. These acts may feel small in the moment, but they ripple outward in ways we may never fully see.

This Juneteenth and beyond, we’re celebrating the extraordinary entrepreneurs, creators, and community builders who are part of the fabric of our neighborhoods – who represent the very best of what business and humanity can be. And we’re inviting you to join us, because together, we are stronger.

Black Business Excellence

Celebrating Black businesses is about recognizing the remarkable resilience, innovation, and community The phrase "BLACK BUSINESS EXCELLENCE" stands bold on vibrant red, yellow, and green brushstrokes, radiating local pride and unity. impact of entrepreneurs who have built thriving enterprises despite facing significant systemic challenges. These celebrations honor not just the products and services Black businesses provide, but the vision, determination, and cultural richness they bring to our shared economic landscape and to society as a whole.

When we celebrate Black businesses, we’re lifting up enterprises that operate with a dual mission – achieving commercial success while uplifting the communities we all call home. Black business owners and leaders create jobs for our neighbors, serve as mentors to the next generation, support local partnerships and socially responsible initiatives, and preserve cultural traditions that make our neighborhoods richer and more vibrant for everyone in them.

Ultimately, celebrating Black businesses is about amplifying voices and stories that might otherwise go unnoticed, creating visibility that leads to increased support and fostering an environment where entrepreneurship of every kind can thrive. When any business in our community succeeds, we all benefit. That success deserves to be acknowledged, supported, and celebrated year-round.

Creating Ripples: Why Black Businesses Matter to Us All

Supporting Black businesses extends far beyond individual transactions – it’s an investment in our shared community resilience, in economic equity, and in the generational wealth that anchors neighborhoods for decades to come. When we choose to support Black-owned and Black-led enterprises, we’re contributing to a ripple effect that strengthens the blocks and zip codes where we all live, work, create, and play.

Empowering Black businesses challenges systemic inequities in access to capital, customers, and networks that have historically created uneven playing fields. It helps diversify industries, brings fresh perspectives and innovations to the marketplace, and creates visible examples of excellence that inspire the next generation of business leaders – leaders who will shape our economy and our culture in ways we can only begin to imagine.

This support also builds cultural wealth for all of us – preserving traditions, celebrating heritage, and creating spaces where excellence is recognized and uplifted. Black-owned and Black-led businesses contribute to the rich, layered story of American entrepreneurship while meeting community needs that only those deeply rooted in a place can truly understand. Supporting them is how we build a more equitable economy together: through vision, hard work, and the kind of community investment that pays forward for generations.

Change Starts Here: The Power of Showing Up Local  Vibrant yellow text pops on black, declaring “BLACK BUSINESSES MATTER”—a bold tribute to Essex County’s resilient community spirit.

Real change doesn’t begin in a boardroom or a government building. It begins in our neighborhoods. It begins at a farmer’s market stall, a local boutique, a community art gallery, a family-owned restaurant on the corner. Change can begin with us – right where we are.

When we commit to supporting the businesses woven into the fabric of our communities, we participate in something much larger than a single transaction. We vote with our dollars for the kind of neighborhood we want to live in. We send a signal that every member of our community belongs, that their dreams matter, and that we are paying attention. We say, with our presence and our purchases, that we see each other.

Ask yourself: what Black-owned and Black-led businesses are within five miles of your home? What would it mean to become a regular? To leave a glowing review? To tell three friends? These aren’t grand gestures, they’re exactly the kind of consistent, local love that sustains a small business through a slow month, a hard year, or a season of change.

In Uncertain Times, We Rise Together

Let’s be honest: these are challenging, uncertain times. Many of us are carrying more than we let on – worry about the future, grief over division, exhaustion from simply keeping up. It’s okay to be you. It’s okay to be in your feelings about it. It’s okay to need a moment. But here’s what we know: the antidote to uncertainty is not isolation. It’s community.

Now, more than ever, is the time to lean on one another, to lean into community. To show up for the people and businesses in our neighborhoods. To reach out, to share, to collaborate, to encourage. When the world feels heavy, there is profound power in the simple act of choosing not to go it alone – in walking through the door of a local shop, starting a conversation, asking how someone is doing and actually meaning it.

Supporting the businesses around us during difficult times is one of the most tangible ways we can say to our neighbors: I see you. I’m here. We’re in this together. And in that exchange, that small, human exchange of dollars and presence and care, something powerful happens. Love shows up. And love, as we know, is always greater than hate.

Beyond Juneteenth: Why Year-Round Support Matters  Bold yellow "BLACK LIVES MATTER" pops on black with rectangle accents—a vibrant symbol of Salem and Essex County’s creative unity.

While Juneteenth (June 19), Black History Month (February), and Black Business Month (August) bring increased awareness and attention to Black-owned and Black-led businesses, the reality is that the businesses in our communities need our support every single day of the year.

The challenges they face don’t pause for calendar dates or holidays. By choosing to show up consistently, not just during designated months, we contribute to the kind of economic equity and community development that creates lasting change.

Building a thriving, equitable community requires a marathon commitment, not a sprint. When we integrate intentional support into our everyday choices – where we eat, where we shop, whose work we share – we contribute to generational wealth, stronger neighborhoods, and an economy that truly works for everyone. Real change happens through sustained action, not temporary trends.

It’s never just about making purchases. It’s about building community. It’s about celebrating the extraordinary creativity and entrepreneurship that surrounds us. It’s about choosing, every day, to be kind, be mindful, and be committed to sustainable change in our neighborhoods and community. Every action, no matter how small, makes a difference.

Together, We Are Stronger

We can’t solve everything alone and the great news is that we don’t have to. But together, we can each carry a piece of the load. Together, we can show up at grand openings. We can leave the review, make the introduction, send the encouraging message. We can mentor the next generation of creators, entrepreneurs, changemakers, and leaders. We can partner across our networks, share resources, and cross-pollinate ideas in ways that lift everyone up.

Community is not just where we live. It’s what we build, what we protect, and what we actively invest in with our time, our attention, and our money. When any business in our neighborhood thrives, it creates a ripple: jobs, mentorship, inspiration, generational stability. When our community thrives, we all rise. Every single one of us.
