NAGLY (North Shore Alliance of GLBTQ+ Youth) and MassOpera invite you to join in for A NAGLY Virtual Cabaret this Saturday, July 25 at 8:00 PM. The evening will feature queer and GLBTQ+ spectrum performers singing their favorite pop hits and show tunes along with mini-interviews and testimonials by those who work most closely with NAGLY.

MassOpera has been successfully hosting virtual fundraisers since May, and partnering with a cultural organization like this allows NAGLY’s initiatives to reach a wider audience.

MassOpera is a forward-thinking company, actively creating partnerships with organizations fighting systemic oppression, particularly in new and innovative ways, such as this virtual concert,” said MassOpera Executive Director, William Neely in a press release for the event.

While this is NAGLY’s first official virtual fundraiser, they have been hosting dance parties and monthly meetings in an effort to continue to engage with GLBTQ+ youth in the community. But, because most of their programming is rooted in being able to gather in a common space, COVID-19 restrictions have reduced the impact that NAGLY has been able to have over the last few months.

“Many of our youth aren’t out at home,” said Stephen “Steve” Harrington, Executive Director of NAGLY. “Being able to get away from the house and be in a space where they’re accepted and understood is important, so having that taken away from them is troubling.”

Another challenge is that because NAGLY doesn’t take contact information from their youth, in an effort to maintain their anonymity, the only real contact they’ve had with community youth since March is through these virtual events. But with some funding, they will have the power to change that in a more impactful way, and create interactive initiatives designed to engage their followers.

“We’re moving away from some of the more serious topics that we’ve always focused on – things like body image and relationships – to making the meetings more enjoyable with games and scavenger hunts, things that will offer them some respite from their days.”

Community support through these fundraisers will allow them to hire more staff and recruit more volunteers, offer more resources to youth in their community, and continue to provide interactive programming that can keep young people from feeling isolated during these unprecedented times.

Ways to Support NAGLY prior to and during the Virtual Cabaret:

Until tomorrow, June 22, NAGLY is offering attendees the opportunity to dedicate a song to someone special (e.g. ‘From Duncan to Marcus: You’re my eternal PootiePie!’)

Or you can simply give whatever amount you want to support NAGLY, even become a sustaining donor. All dedications, and donations can be made online at www.givingtools.com/nagly – (Make sure to select the CABARET NAGLY Campaign)

And mark your calendars to watch the show on July 25th at 8 p.m., on NAGLY’s Facebook page.
