Salem is renowned for its vibrant creative community. Gallows Hill Artists is Salem’s distinctive collaborative creative space. We are pleased to announce that work has commenced to double our capacity and add an additional floor of artist studios at our historic Gallows Hill location.

With this expansion, we will be adding another 6000 square feet of artist workspace, resulting in a total of 12,000 square feet with 26 artist studios across two expansive warehouse floors. The building retains the charm of Salem’s industrial history with its original post and beam interiors.

Our current community of Gallows Hill Artists appreciates the collaborative atmosphere in our existing 12 studios. When the opportunity to expand arose, it was apparent that additional studios were needed in Salem.

The 14 new studio spaces vary in size from 175 square feet to 875 square feet, starting at $350 per month. These spaces feature ten-foot ceilings and large windows overlooking Gallows Hill Park, creating an open and dynamic environment conducive to artistic creation. While most studios are enclosed with walls and doors, several affordable studios are open to a common area and shared workspace.

In addition to the new artist studios, Gallows Hill will offer a community darkroom that provides workshops in film photography, photo printing, and alternative darkroom techniques.

Gallows Hill Artists also benefit from seasonal open studio events, a rotating exhibition space, and ample shared common areas with kitchen and utility sinks. Studio rates include WiFi, utilities, and onsite parking.

Gallows Hill Artists was founded in 2022 by Salem MA photographer James Bostick. Recognizing the essential need for affordable artist studio space in Salem, Bostick transformed his fine art studio into a community hub for creativity. His vision is to create an environment that fosters individual artistry while building a supportive community of artists.
