In your words… Tell us about your organization, business, initiative.

ShelbyHunter Co. is the umbrella org I set up to monetize any projects I get into. I’m primarily a painter and a writer. I work large, big paintings and long manuscripts. But I’m just now getting the space and time to explore new mediums, and more community-focused projects, and build a low barrier to entry product line.

Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do? Share your passions for your business, initiative, organization.

I’m a self-taught painter working primarily in large abstracts. Before I ever picked up a paintbrush I was a writer, and painting became just another way to tell my stories. Now I’m excited to break out of those comfort zones. Part of my energy is focused on building a product line that runs itself (prints, apparel, stickers, etc.) and the other part is focused on finding new ways to channel this deep need to create. I really like the idea of doing immersive shows, but I don’t have all the pieces for something like that quite yet. Finally, I’m trying to build a strong business foundation for that to all grow on.

What role do you think your business plays in supporting a more creative community? OR your community in general. (Bonus! Why do you think a more creative community is important?)

Right now, very little. Other than the fact that I am adamant everyone can be creative in their own way. And I don’t believe you have to be remotely good at something to give it a shot. I would love to put together or get involved in initiatives that promote cutting yourself some slack, just having fun, and encouraging people to enjoy the many phases of the learning process (instead of just watching the finish line).

BONUS: Because EVERYONE is creative. Creativity gets pigeonholed into the arts and that’s a damn shame. I want my mechanic to be creative, I want my accountant to be creative. I want people to feel empowered to look at life from their angle and use their voices. It breeds ingenuity and out-of-the-box thinking. Creativity is just another word for curiosity, and I think when people don’t self-identify as ‘creative’, they can lose some of their curiosity toward life.

What was the last book you read OR What was the last video you watched that made an impact on you?

Recently, The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin.

What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you or your business?

My first ‘real’ painting was done in December 2019. I was contemplating withdrawing from college and had just pulled 3 doubles at my bistro job. So I said screw it, went to the art store with the tips I had made, and bought the biggest canvas they had (an old dream of mine). Picked up some paint and brushes as well, and got to work. By the end of the painting – 8 hours later – I had decided it was time to make some serious life changes. Hands down the best money ever spent and is directly the reason I am where I am today.
