Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 21, which is this week. You haven’t had time to pick up or plan anything and, it’s not that you’ve been procrastinating, you’ve just (reasonably) had your mind on other things.

June is usually a time for cookouts and picnics, sports and camping, sunburns and mosquito bites, but there hasn’t been much of that. Many of us are still stuck inside because of COVID-19 restrictions and many others are spending their energy supporting the #BlackLivesMatter movement, so celebrating this might look a little different.

It’s also Pride month – which means it’s important to recognize that “Dad” can mean a lot of things, but it boils down to the person (or people) in your life who have been there for you and maybe showed you how to use power tools when you were a kid.

For a Good Cause

It’s important to put this front and center. All shopping holidays are an opportunity to do good (not that excuses are needed). Yes, shower your Dad with gifts, but also consider reaching out a hand to people who really need it. Consider giving to the Massachusetts Bail Fund or the National Bond Fund to help reunite families.

Or consider donating to these BIPOC owned and centered organizations (or take a look into charity navigator):

For the Dad About Town

Do the Dads in your life like going out for a great time? Consider inviting a special guest or performer for Zoom party! Book these talents for your event:

For the Sporty Dad

Take your dad hiking or camping. You don’t have to keep cooped up when the sun is shining and the trails are open. To make sure Dad’s got the clothes needed for the trail Pick up this Wool Camp Cap from Advencher Supply Co ($35), this Waikiki Beach Tank from District Trading Company ($15), this Royal Blue Fleece Vest from Reality Snatcher ($40), this Canvas Cooler from Rumson’s ($25), or to be a real winner, a Mystery Box from Sully’s Brand ($50).

Also don’t forget to pick up a mask for Dad (and yourself) from Notso Kitty ($9)

For the Foodie

Restaurants around the North Shore opened up their patios (and streets!) this past week when Governor Baker gave the phase 2 go-ahead. Obviously you should pick up cookies from Goodnight Fatty, but if you’re looking for a full meal, here are some restaurants to consider.

Casa Tequila

Al Fresco Dining:

BIPOC restaurants to try for takeout or delivery:

For the Mixologist

The Dads among us need a chance to unwind after a hard day. Whether that’s with virtual entertainment streamed straight to their screen of choice from The Cabot’s list of movie rentals or with excellent libations, mixers, and equipment from these sources.

Check out these Custom Bitters from Old Growth Alchemy ($18-35), Zen and Tonic cocktail recipes from Emporium 32 ($25), a mixer sampler from Fruitations ($30), or Orange and Cinnamon Syrup from Roseadelas ($12)

Or pick up a growler or beer to go curbside from these locations:

For Those Who Like Weird Art

What do you get for the Dad who has skeletons (they’re Halloween decorations, obviously) in their closets? Something extra weird. How about this Bats and Ferns button-up shirt designed by Bats in the Belfry Crafts and sold at Die with Your Boots On ($64), this Ghost Moth Illustration from Ghost Wolf Handmade ($6), this Bigfoot Social Distance piece from NOXCRAFTART ($13), or a Father’s Day ‘Hammer at Home’ Take-Home Kits – from Hammer and Stain ($25-$65).

Or grab a sweet greeting card from Coon’s Card & Gift Shop, m.ink studios, or Moody’s Home and Gifts.
