About Us

Gallows Hill Artists provides a dedicated artist workspace housed in a historic industrial building at 16 Proctor Street in Salem’s Gallows Hill neighborhood. Founded in 2021 by photographer James Bostick, our vibrant community has grown from a single studio subletting arrangement to a thriving 26-studio complex spanning 12,000 square feet across the third and fourth floors. Originally built in the early 1900s as The Arthur J Mulholland Company tannery, this unique warehouse survived the Great Salem Fire of 1914, making it the city’s last remaining tannery, now repurposed to foster artistic innovation. Our facility is dedicated to working artists, creating an environment where creativity is not just encouraged—it’s celebrated.
