The City of Salem is excited to invite all community members to this year’s Juneteenth Celebration, taking place on June 18th at Riley Plaza. This significant event, known as the Juneteenth Jam, will commence at 12:00 noon and is an inclusive, free community event celebrating freedom and unity. Salem Juneteenth Jam 2024

Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th, marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, this holiday has grown to symbolize not only the end of slavery but also the enduring fight for equality and justice. Events like Salem’s Juneteenth Jam are vital as they foster community spirit, promote inclusivity, and honor African Americans’ rich cultural heritage and history.

In collaboration with the North Shore Juneteenth Association and supported by a grant from Mass Humanities through the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Mayor Dominick Pangallo extends a heartfelt invitation to all. “I am happy to announce that being a recipient of the Reading Frederick Douglass Grant from Mass Humanities will allow us to expand our Juneteenth celebration and recognition,” said Mayor Pangallo. “Thanks to the work from members of the Mayor’s Office staff along with the consultation of North Shore Juneteenth, this year’s ceremony will be thoughtful and fun and allow our community to come together to celebrate.”

The celebration will kick off with remarks from community members, elected officials, and residents, followed by the playing of the Black National Anthem and the raising of the Juneteenth Flags. One of the highlights of the day is a public reading of Frederick Douglass’s powerful speech, “The Meaning Of The Fourth Of July For The Negro,” led by Nicole McClain. This reading offers a profound reflection on freedom and is a reminder of the enduring struggle for equality. Salem Juneteenth Jam 2024

After the ceremony, the festivities will continue with games, activities, crafts, face painting, music, and food from Ray Adea’s. Additionally, the event organizers have partnered with Salem Historical Tours to offer a free Black history tour of Salem, beginning at 2:00 pm. This 90-minute walking tour can accommodate up to 40 participants, who can sign up on a first-come-first-served basis at Riley Plaza on the event day.

Though the daytime activities at Riley Plaza will conclude at 5:00 pm, the celebration doesn’t end there. The City of Salem, in collaboration with the Salem Common Neighborhood Association, will host a special free screening of Disney’s 2018 movie Black Panther on the Salem Common. The movie screening will start at 8:30 pm and run for approximately 90 minutes. North Shore Juneteenth.
