Celebrating 60 Years of North Shore Community College: A Community Milestone

It Started With a Dream and 474 Neighbors

Back in 1964, something special happened in our North Shore community. A small group of 474 students, 15 dedicated faculty members, and a borrowed space in Beverly came together with a shared belief: that everyone deserves access to quality education. As Massachusetts’ ninth community college, NSCC started small but dreamed big. Those first students chose from Liberal Arts, General Education, Business Administration, Executive Secretary programs, and a few others—each one taking a chance on something new.

Sixty years later, NSCC isn’t just a college—it’s a family that spans the entire North Shore. From Lynn to Danvers, Beverly to Gloucester, Peabody to Marblehead, and everywhere in between, they’ve grown together with their community. Their two vibrant campuses (including the Commonwealth’s first state-owned Zero Net Energy building in Danvers!) now welcome thousands of students each year into over 60 programs that reflect the dreams and needs of our region.

And here’s what makes us especially proud to have NSCC as a member: they’re ranked among the top in Massachusetts for serving adult learners and recognized nationally in the top 25 for advancing opportunities for low-income students. These aren’t just numbers—they’re our neighbors, our friends, our family members achieving their dreams.

A Community That Lifts Each Other Up

What hasn’t changed in 60 years? NSCC’s heart. They’re still that same diverse, caring, inclusive community that believes in lifting each other up. Whether you’re a first-generation student blazing a trail for your family, a parent balancing classes with raising kids, or someone seeking a fresh start—you belong at NSCC.

They’ve built their community around accessibility: free tuition for Massachusetts residents, flexible schedules that work with your life, professors who know your name, and a support system that’s there every step of the way. From career counseling to academic tutoring, from partnerships with local employers to smooth pathways to four-year universities, NSCC is dedicated to helping every student succeed.
