Historic Milestone Year for Essex County Heritage Funding
Essex Heritage has launched its 28th annual Partnership Grant Program for 2026, offering 12 grants of $2,000 each to support cultural and natural heritage projects across Essex County, Massachusetts. The announcement, made on January 5, 2026, continues the organization’s longstanding commitment to preserving and enhancing the Essex National Heritage Area’s unique resources.
Applications are now open and will be accepted through Monday, February 16, 2026. The streamlined application process has been designed for simplicity, with most submissions taking less than an hour to complete.
Grant Details and Eligibility
Each grant provides $2,000 in reimbursement upon project completion and requires a minimum total project cost of $4,000. Non-profit organizations located in Essex County and municipal entities affiliated with one of the county’s 34 communities are eligible to apply.
Four Grant Categories
Grants are available in four distinct categories:
- Education: Create or further develop educational opportunities for youth
- Interpretation: Increase awareness and understanding of the region’s cultural heritage
- Preservation: Preserve or enhance historic structures, landscapes, and cultural resources
- Accessibility: Provide equitable experiences for residents and visitors to the Essex National Heritage Area
Special Focus on Revolutionary War History
The 2026 grant cycle carries added significance as it marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in 1776. In recognition of this milestone, projects specifically focusing on Essex County connections within the broader “Revolution 250” context will be given special consideration.
“Over the next year, I am excited to partner with 12 grant recipients in the development and implementation of a broad range of educational, interpretive, accessibility, and preservation projects throughout Boston’s North Shore and the Merrimack Valley, particularly those focusing on Essex County’s Revolutionary history,” stated Charles Smith, grants program manager.
Program Impact: 27 Years of Heritage Preservation
The Essex Heritage Partnership Grant Program has established itself as a cornerstone of regional preservation efforts since its inception. As a matching grant program, it fosters and supports the stewardship activities of municipalities and organizations that share Essex Heritage’s mission to preserve and enhance the historic, cultural, and natural resources of the Essex National Heritage Area.
Over its 27-year history, the program has demonstrated substantial impact throughout the region, investing more than $1.6 million in support of Essex County’s nationally significant heritage resources.
