April vacation in Essex County this year? Completely, utterly, embarrassingly stacked. We’re talking live
reptiles at a museum, slime in three scientific variations, unicorn potions, an 18th-century sailor’s medicine kit, cedar bark weaving by a Wampanoag artist, a witchy portrait session, free admission to one of Salem’s most storied landmarks, and a story about the first elephant to ever set foot in America. And that’s before we even get to the pottery wheels, the puppet shows, the woodland scavenger hunts, and the garden gnome painting at a brewery on a Friday night.
Essex County doesn’t do spring halfway. We organized everything city by city so you can actually plan your week — whether you’re staying local or finally using April vacation as the excuse to explore the towns you keep meaning to visit. April 20–26, 2026. Let’s go.
Beverly — Hit the Trail
Hike & Seek: The Blooming Woods Walk | Long Hill
Sometimes the best spring break activity is just getting outside before anyone can argue about it. The Trustees are inviting families to explore the Garden-to-Garden Trail at Long Hill, where woodland paths wind through blooming gardens full of spring wildflowers. Pre-register to receive a downloadable activity bundle packed with maps, a scavenger hunt, crafts, a reading list, and seasonal recipes. Self-guided, so come any day that works. Park in the lower lot and walk past the greenhouse to start.
Pair this with the Hike & Seek at Stevens-Coolidge in North Andover for a full week of outdoor adventure!

Marblehead — Make Something Beautiful
April Vacation Jewelry Workshop for Kids | Eos Designs Studio
Tucked into a rear-cottage studio in Marblehead, Eos Designs is running a week-long jewelry-making class that goes well beyond friendship bracelets. Kids learn knotting, wirework, and stringing — and by Friday they’ll have a full collection of handmade accessories to show for it: necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, anklets, and more. Returning students can tackle more advanced versions of the projects. All materials included.
North Andover — Spring Is Already Here
Hike & Seek: Sprouts of Spring | Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens
The gardens at Stevens-Coolidge are quietly doing something spectacular right now — and this program gives families a reason to slow down and actually notice it. From acorn to oak, seed to flower, the grounds are in full spring transformation. Pre-register for a downloadable activity bundle with maps, a scavenger hunt, crafts, a reading list, and seasonal recipes. No check-in required — just show up, explore, and let the kids lead.
Peabody — A Little Bit of Everything

Create & Escape
- Stars, Stripes & Bloom Painting – If Monday morning’s activities have run their course and you need a creative afternoon reset, Create & Escape is hosting a sip-and-paint session at Granite Coast Brewing — a rustic American flag with a floral twist. All supplies included, step-by-step instruction provided, and your first drink is part of the deal. No experience needed, family-friendly throughout.
- Open Studio – No agenda, no project brief — just show up and make something. Create & Escape opens their studio doors for a relaxed, drop-in creative session. A perfect low-key way to end the week.
- Spring Garden Gnome Painting – Once the kids are in bed, Granite Coast has one more event waiting. Create & Escape returns Friday evening with garden gnome painting — a fun, relaxed way for parents and older kids to close out vacation week with a drink and something to paint.
Salem — The Week’s Biggest Lineup
Salem is doing the most this April vacation — and that’s saying something for a city that never really slows down. From free museum programs and live animals to pottery wheels, witchy spa days, and a piece of genuine local history, there’s enough here to fill the entire week without leaving the city.
Peabody Essex Museum
- Creative Kids: Knowing Nature – PEM’s full-week program for tweens is the kind of spring break experience kids actually remember. Tied to the exhibition Knowing Nature: Stories of the Boreal Forest, students spend the week making art, writing, and creating multimedia work — with real time outdoors in PEM’s gardens threaded throughout. If your 11–13 year old wants more than a day trip, this is it.
- Live Animal Encounter with Joy Marzolf – Real forest animals, in person, at the museum. Joy Marzolf brings New England and global forest species into PEM’s Main Atrium and walks families through
how each one survives — finding food, avoiding predators, handling extreme temperatures. Included with admission, and kids under 16 always get in free. - Drop-In Art: Mixed Media Woven Globe – An Earth Day community art project that’s genuinely collaborative — families use textile materials and hand-drawn messages to help decorate a giant sphere together. Drop in anytime.
- Cedar Bark Mat Weaving Demonstration – One of the most meaningful programs of the week. Artist Elizabeth James-Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag) demonstrates the traditional Native American practice of weaving a mat from the inner bark of a cedar tree — and shares how she sustainably harvests and prepares natural materials, including plant dyes, for her artworks featured in the Knowing Nature exhibition. Beautiful, educational, and unlike anything else on this list.
The Good Witch of Salem’s Spell Studio
- Flower Power Slime Potions – Start the week the Salem way. Kids create their own flower-themed slime, guided by the Apprentice Witches — and take their creation home. A perfect first-morning activity before the week really gets going.
- Unicorn Spa Day – A fitting way to close out the week — kids mix their own unicorn potion, make crystal wishes, and get glittery nails and a touch of magic. The Good Witch knows how to send them home happy.
- Fairy Spa Day – The magic keeps going into the weekend. Children create their own fairy potion and receive sparkly nails, fancy fairy hair accessories, and a touch of glitter — all hosted by the Witch Apprentices.
Salem YMCA
April Vacation Pottery Program – At the Y, this week-long pottery program has kids working with clay through hand-building and wheel-throwing. From pinch pots to small sculptures, they go home with pieces they made themselves. Beginner-friendly, all materials provided — just bring a willingness to get messy.- April Vacation Theatre Program: Marvelous Puppet & Mime Revue – Storytelling without words — that’s the premise, and it’s harder and more fun than it sounds. Kids spend the week exploring puppetry and mime, building original characters, developing performance pieces, and wrapping up Friday with a showcase. A real confidence-builder for kids who love performing arts.
Witch Pix
- Vacation Kids Photo Op – Four signature styles, one unforgettable Salem memory. Kids choose from Graveyard Magic, Crystal Ball Witchery, 1692 Glamour, or Earth Witch — step into costume, step into character, and walk away with a small gallery of expressive portraits. The kind of thing they’ll still be talking about when school starts again.
House of the Seven Gables
- Essex County Days – One of the best offers of the entire week. Essex County residents get free admission to The House of the Seven Gables all vacation — just bring a valid ID or recent utility bill showing your Essex County address to pick up tickets in person. Tours run throughout the day but capacity is limited, so arrive early and enjoy the grounds while you wait.
Essex Heritage
- A Sailor’s Life: Food & Medicine – Led by educator Dan Marshall, this hands-on program drops kids into the world of an 18th-century sailor — choosing supplies for a voyage, learning how crews kept food from spoiling at sea, salting green beans, and mixing a remedy for scurvy. Free, genuinely interactive, and presented in partnership with Salem Maritime National Historical Park as part of the America’s 250th program series. Space is limited — register ahead.
- Elephants & Sweet Treats: A Storytime of Salem Firsts! – Here’s something most people don’t know: Salem was home to the first elephant ever to set foot in America. This free storytime with the Salem Public Library builds a whole hour around Salem firsts — books, games, a craft, and a sweet treat at the end. Open to all, registration suggested.
