About The Salem Partnership
The Salem Partnership is a nonprofit public-private organization founded to help Salem grow and prosper — and to make sure that growth continues for generations to come. Unlike typical business organizations, the Partnership focuses on a small number of high-impact, long-range initiatives spanning transportation, seaport development, and courts and civic infrastructure. Members include the Mayor of Salem, executives from major businesses and nonprofits, and community leaders united around a shared vision for the city.
Our Experience
Founded in 1987, the Salem Partnership has nearly four decades of experience bringing complex projects from concept to completion. The organization has been the driving force behind landmark initiatives including the construction of the replica tall ship Friendship of Salem, the development of Salem’s courthouse complex, the launch of the Salem-Boston ferry, and the ongoing push for a South Salem commuter rail stop. Furthermore, the Partnership is nationally recognized as an effective model for public-private collaboration.

Economic Development Advocacy
The Salem Partnership works at the intersection of public policy and private initiative, advocating for projects and investments that strengthen Salem’s long-term economic health. Rather than spreading resources across a broad agenda, the Partnership concentrates on targeted priorities — giving it the focus needed to move the needle on complex, multi-year initiatives.
Transportation Infrastructure
A signature initiative of the Salem Partnership is the proposed South Salem Commuter Rail Stop, situated near Salem State University and Mass General Brigham Salem Hospital. The Partnership has secured significant federal funding to advance the project through design phases and continues to lead community engagement throughout the planning process.
Maritime Heritage & the Friendship of Salem
The Salem Partnership played a central role in bringing the Friendship of Salem to life — a full-rigged replica of an 18th-century tall ship and the heart of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. The Partnership remains committed to the vessel’s long-term future through the Friends of Friendship initiative, which supports ongoing maintenance, restoration, and community programming.
Friends of Friendship
Friends of Friendship is the philanthropic arm of the Salem Partnership, dedicated to preserving Salem’s iconic tall ship and expanding the programs it makes possible. Key focus areas include:
- Maritime Skills Program — Hands-on training connecting young adults with well-paying maritime industry careers
- Maritime Programming — Cultural and educational experiences rooted in coastal New England heritage
- Sail Salem Sound — Free public sailing experiences on Salem Sound, offered by lottery in partnership with the National Park Service
Civic Redevelopment
The Salem Partnership was instrumental in keeping Salem’s courts anchored downtown, advocating over many years for what became the J. Michael Ruane Judicial Center, the Family and Probate Court, and the ongoing redevelopment of the historic Superior Court and County Commissioners Building. In addition, the Partnership is partnering with the City of Salem and regional planners on a long-range study of the Jefferson Avenue Corridor, an area with significant potential for thoughtful, community-driven redevelopment.
What Makes The Salem Partnership Special
The Salem Partnership is not a general business membership organization — it is a focused civic engine built for large-scale, long-term change. A lean agenda, a membership drawn from Salem’s highest levels of public and private leadership, and a nearly 40-year record of results set it apart. Moreover, the Partnership takes positions based on what is good for Salem and the region, not what benefits any individual member — a commitment that has earned it lasting trust across the community.
