Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine brilliantly weave classic Grimm fairy tales together to create an epic story about wishes, family, and the choices we make. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but at a price.

“For most, fairy tales are the first stories we encounter. Like the best of stories, they feed our imagination, while also helping us face life’s conflicts,” shares director Bill Cunningham. “Into the Woods challenges audiences to look beyond simple questions. What is good? Who is bad? Where is the promise of a happy ending? The woods are full of dangers, hardships, and disappointments. These experiences teach us. We learn. We grow. Our character is formed. It is from these moments that our true stories are revealed to us.”

Winner of five Tony Awards, eight Drama Desk awards, and four Olivier Awards, “Into the Woods” premiered at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in 1987. It has since enjoyed numerous successful revivals, most recently at the Roundabout Theater, becoming New York’s surprise hit of the 2015 season. The popular film adaptation of “Into the Woods” by Walt Disney Pictures premiered in 2014 and was critically and commercially successful. Already in the top five of the most successful movie musical adaptations ever, it was nominated for three Academy Awards and three Golden Globes.
