Sevening (v.): the act of showing up after seven(ish) for your people, your community, and honestly yourself in Essex County.

Oh hey there, Essex County. Karma’s a whole production number this week, and honey, the choreography is tight.

Last week Essex County anted up — tarot cards, board game night, music bingo, the Garbage Pail Kids and Goat played, Dr. Kojo prescribed a whole set of laughs, and more. Every bit of it came back around eventually. That’s just how this county runs.

This week is a masterclass in reciprocity. Five dollars here becomes a whole new tradition there. A tip in a jar becomes a standing ovation. A donation at the door becomes a full pantry. A class you paid for hands you a skill you’ll use forever. Effort in, glow-up out — every single ticket, tip, and dollar this week is on its way back to somebody, and it might just be you. What goes around is already on its way.

Monthly Music Series: Heavy Bevies at 7:00 PM

Five dollars in, a whole new tradition out. The Heavy Bevies are five Beverly locals turning rock, roots, and Americana into an hour of unfussy, foot-stomping charm, all for a cover charge that even includes light refreshments — put in a fiver, sashay away on the first night of what’s clearly going to be a beloved monthly ritual. The Bower at Montserrat is opening the doors on this new tradition, so get there for the 6:30 doors and claim your seat before the slide guitar starts something.

Essex Improv Drop-In at 7:00 PM

Whatever energy you bring to the scene, your fellow improvisers hand it right back to you, usually bigger and weirder. Just scenework, feedback, and whatever chaos the room throws your way. Off Cabot keeps this weekly summer drop-in open to every skill level, so whether you’re a seasoned scene-stealer or you’ve never said “yes, and” out loud in your life, strap in for this sevening. Twenty-four dollars buys two hours of glorious improvisational nerve, and what you commit to the bit comes straight back as laughter.

Summer Soiree presented by The Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce at 6:30 PM

Grab a balcony spot, because it’s about to be the best seat in Newburyport. The Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce is throwing a proper soiree at the Firehouse Center for the Arts, with Yankee Homecoming music floating down from above and bites from Brine and Sea Level doing the heavy lifting below. Twenty-five dollars in, an entire evening of local goodwill and connections out — the kind of investment that keeps paying you back all summer. Tickets are limited, so don’t dawdle, honeys.

Cake Decorating 101: Sunflower at 7:00 PM

Put in an hour and a half of piping, and you walk out with a whole cake to show for it — that’s a return most classes can’t promise. Granite Coast Brewing and Tiffany’s Tasty Treats are hosting a sunflower cake class that welcomes the whole family, buttercream disasters and all. Materials included, one drink included, dramatic frosting meltdowns entirely optional but honestly expected. Oh Seraphine!

Karaoke at Jacobs Corner at 9:00 PM 

Belt it out and the room hands it right back to you — that’s the whole karaoke contract. Every single Thursday, ND Productions turns Jacobs Corner into the county’s most forgiving stage. No lip sync, no backup dancers, just you, the mic, and a runtime stretching clear past midnight. Bring your signature song, bring your loudest friend for the harmony, and don’t forget the tip jar — the host earns every dollar dodging your pitchiest notes. Er um, I mean pitch perfect notes. Tee hee.

Evening Yoga in the Gardens at 5:30 PM

Whatever you release on the mat, the garden gives you something calmer in return. As the sun dips low over Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens, an instructor from The Yoga Loft leads a golden-hour sevening built for unclenching whatever you’ve been holding onto since Monday. Members pay fifteen dollars, nonmembers twenty-five, and everyone leaves softer around the edges. Bring a mat and comfortable layers — pre-registration required, rain or shine, because the gardens wait for no one.

Friday Night Family Films: Big at Hale Farm at 7:30 PM

Blankets down, popcorn out, chosen fam and Tom Hanks about to remind an entire lawn what it felt like to wish yourself grown. Historic Beverly is screening Big under the stars at the John Hale House for five dollars a head, with lawn games from The Castle warming up the crowd beforehand. It’s a carry-in, carry-out night — you bring the snacks and the blanket, and the deal is simple: whatever you bring onto that historic lawn, you carry back off it, nostalgia included. Burlesque in the Speakeasy at 9:00 PM

Hellur! Tip your queen and watch her give it right back in confidence, sparkle, and one unforgettable reveal. The Betsi Feathers are back, and so is The Bell Inn & Tavern’s most scandalous corner. This speakeasy-style burlesque night turns up the heat, the humor, and the sheer audacity for one intimate, 21-and-up evening. Doors at 8:30, curtain at nine, full food and drink menu to keep the flirtation fueled. Join me for six oysters, one Sailor 75, and a night that’s about to get a lot more scandalous. Oh honeys, let’s start briny, finish bubbly, and watch the reveal. Ooh la la.

Eden’s Bloody Birthday Benefit Concert at 6:00 PM

This is what goes around, no metaphor required — you bring a period product donation, it goes straight to Salem Pantry, full stop. Eden Rayz is turning her birthday into a full sonic blood ritual for this bloody sevening, and the Satanic Temple’s Salem Art Gallery is the only room dramatic enough to hold it. Part performance, part death-awareness meditation, entirely in service of ending period poverty alongside Menstruatin’ with Satan. Fifty dollars plus the donation gets you through the door. Solidarity, dressed up as ritual theater, and unbothered about it.

Haunted Footsteps Ghost Tour at 8:00 PM

History has a way of circling back, and Salem never lets anyone forget it. Salem Historical Tours knows exactly where the bodies are buried, allegedly, and they are walking you straight past every last one of them. Ninety minutes of murder, misfortune, and things that go bump well after dark, starting from 8 Central Street — the same stories, the same streets, always coming back around after sundown. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a tolerance for chills that have nothing to do with the ocean breeze.

Consider this your receipt. Whatever you put into Essex County this week — a fiver, a tip, a donation, an off-key rendition of a Whitney Houston deep cut — it is coming back around, usually with interest.
