About Airtight Garage
Airtight Garage is a contemporary art space and incubator in Salem, Massachusetts, dedicated to bringing compensated exhibition opportunities and free creative resources to artists across the North Shore and beyond. Organized by artist and art writer Rachel TonThat, it fills a genuine gap in the regional arts landscape — offering curatorial rigor alongside the freedom to experiment. Furthermore, the name borrows from a classic French comic strip about an asteroid whose pocket dimension houses innumerable worlds.
Our Experience
Rachel TonThat brings an MFA from Zurich and deep roots in the North Shore arts community to this project. Her background spans visual art, writing, curation, grant writing, and nonprofit leadership. Additionally, her experience founding community-focused initiatives informs the space’s core commitment to accessibility, collaboration, and genuine artist support.

Airtight Garage Exhibitions
Curated exhibitions emphasize experimentation and spatial thinking across a wide range of media — sculpture, painting, mixed media, sound, text, and site-specific work are all welcome. Selected artists receive financial compensation and travel reimbursement. Moreover, the organization believes paid opportunities for artists are not a luxury but a necessity.
Free Workshops & Programming
Free programming is designed to support artists at every stage of their practice. The Writing For Artists series covers artist statements, exhibition proposals, and grant writing — practical skills that are essential to a sustainable creative career. In addition, artist talks and conversations around creative business models give participants space to learn and connect with one another.
The Offspace Model
The space is rooted in the European offspace tradition — independent art spaces that operate outside the commercial gallery system, prioritizing experimentation and community over sales. Consequently, it offers something genuinely different from membership-based or commercially driven models. It is a place to take risks, grow, and receive real support along the way.
What Makes Airtight Garage Special
Airtight Garage is one of the only contemporary art spaces of its kind on the North Shore — and that is precisely the point. Everything is free to attend, artists are compensated to exhibit, and the space aspires to be a destination worth leaving the city for. Meanwhile, its wheelchair accessible first-floor location less than ten minutes from the Salem train station makes it easy to reach for artists and visitors alike.
