About Odd Cod Studio

Odd Cod Studio is a coastal artisan brand handcrafted on the North Shore of Massachusetts by Michele and Gary Barden — two trained geographers, environmental scientists, and lifelong coastal New Englanders. Founded in 2019 as Signs by MiCo and relaunched as Odd Cod Studio in 2025, the brand creates hand-painted wooden signs, nautical ropework, engraved goods, and coastal homewares using natural materials and traditional maritime techniques. Furthermore, every single piece is made by hand in their Swampscott studio — no shortcuts, no two alike.

Our Experience

Michele and Gary both work full-time as an environmental scientist and GIS director respectively, and met in the geography and cartography department at Salem State University. That shared background in place, landscape, and the stories objects carry runs through everything Odd Cod Studio makes. Additionally, their deep roots in the North Shore give every piece a specificity and authenticity that sets the work apart from coastal décor that simply looks the part.

Odd Cod Studio Hand-Painted Signs

The hand-painted sign collection celebrates the places that matter most — coastal towns, local landmarks, harbors, and beaches across New England. Signs are available in three formats:

• Headland Signs (9×25″) — The statement piece; perfect for entryways and living rooms
• Channel Signs (6×25″) — Slim and versatile, ideal for layering and shelves
• Cove Signs (6×12″) — Compact and personal, featuring zip codes and coordinates

Every sign is painted by hand on wood, sanded for texture and character, and finished in Massachusetts. Custom sign requests are welcome through the studio’s proof-first ordering process.

Nautical Ropework

The ropework collection is tied by hand using centuries-old marlinspike seamanship techniques. Pieces range from Turk’s Head rope wreaths and doorstops to sculptural Mariner’s knot wall art, rope bowls, kringle mats, and Monkey’s Fist paperweights. Moreover, the jewelry line — including rope bracelets, earrings, and cufflinks — brings the same knotwork tradition into wearable form.

Odd Cod Studio Coastal Homewares & Canine Collection

The Coastal Homewares collection brings handcrafted detail to everyday entertaining — engraved acacia cutting boards, rope coasters, napkin rings, wine charms, bottle openers, and wine stoppers, all made by hand in the North Shore studio. In addition, the Coastal Canine collection extends the studio’s natural materials ethos to rope dog toys, a rope leash, and a leather collar — gear made with the same care as everything else, for the best first mates on the coast.

Custom Orders

Custom orders are available for hand-painted signs, ropework commissions, and laser-engraved boards. The studio uses a proof-first process — no payment required until a digital proof is approved. Consequently, every custom piece is exactly what the client envisioned before a single dollar changes hands. Production time is approximately ten business days after approval.
