The Cabot Goes Green: Making Strides Towards A Sustainable Future Pioneering Sustainability in Entertainment Industry

Beverly, Massachusetts, has witnessed a significant change toward environmental conservation by ongoing initiatives at The Cabot Theater. As a part of its latest eco-conscious initiatives, The Cabot eliminated single-use plastic water bottles, marking a critical step towards reducing its ecological footprint.

Hosting large-scale events often comes with a substantial environmental impact. Recognizing this, The Cabot reduced its ecological footprint and adopted sustainable practices that serve the Earth and its community. It all started in 2019 with the first step towards waste reduction. Plastic cups, lids, and straws were replaced with environmentally-friendly compostable alternatives. Following suit, leaky faucets were repaired, toxic cleaning products were returned, and energy-efficient LED lighting was installed, solidifying Cabot’s sustainability commitment.

Fueled by purpose and passion, The Cabot boldly pledged to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles from its premises completely. Backed by the community’s overwhelming support, a successful Giving Tuesday campaign in 2021 raised $14,000 for this cause.

By June 2023, The Cabot had successfully realized its goal, completely removing plastic water bottles from concessions. Beverages are now sold in compostable cups, with filtered water available at all bars and concession counters. The Cabot ensured that all cups, lids, straws, napkins, popcorn, and even food scraps were fully compostable, with their collection managed weekly by Black Earth Compost.

J. Casey Soward, Executive Director of The Cabot, stated, “Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a greener future. By eliminating single-use plastics and embracing compostables, we set a precedent for a sustainable live event experience that inspires positive change in our community.”

Encouraging its visitors to incorporate “Green Actions” beyond the venue, The Cabot empowers individuals to adopt eco-friendly habits and become Green Beverly volunteers. This amplifies the reach of sustainable changes in the City of Beverly. The Cabot’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its walls, with meticulously sorted waste and recycling, and all allowable food waste composted with local partners, thereby nurturing valuable resources for the community.

“The Cabot Goes Green is not just a pledge; it’s a promise to cherish and protect our precious resources,” said Soward. “With the help of our passionate community, we’ve eliminated plastic water bottles, embraced compostables, and there’s more work to be done. Let’s continue this journey together, as small actions add up to make a profound difference.”
