Sculpture Garden and Interactive Art Installations
Starting from April 15, 2024, to April 10, 2025, the Leslie’s Retreat Walking Path will be adorned with five new captivating sculptures as part of the city’s 4th annual Rotating Sculpture Garden. Featured works include the thoughtful Burdened Man by David Adilman & Thomas Berger; Josie Dellenbaugh’s reflective piece, Balancing Act – Expectations; The Portal by Joseph Gray, inviting viewers to step into new dimensions; Bath in Orange by Philip Marshall, offering a wash of warmth and light; and Think Tank by David Skora, challenging viewers to ponder and muse.
Pinhole Camera Exhibition
During the April school vacation week, local artist Patricia Scialo invites visitors to step back in time with her Pinhole Camera exhibition at Old Town Hall. This interactive showcase not only educates visitors on the origins of photography but also merges art with science in an engaging way. The exhibition is a free, fun-filled opportunity for all ages to learn, create, and explore the fascinating world of early photography from April 15-19, 2024.
Our Lady of Reflection
Artist David Jaramillo’s new permanent installation, Our Lady of Reflection, stands as a symbol of hope and cultural unity at Artists’ Row. Carved from a lightning-struck tree and towering at about 11 feet, this piece embodies the spirit and resilience of Native American heritage, shining a light on Salem’s diverse cultural fabric.
2024 Public Artist in Residence: Julia Csekö
May welcomes Julia Csekö, Salem’s 2024 Public Artist in Residence, who will introduce her participatory public art installation, Transcending Borders – Immigrant Experiences and Dreams. With open studio hours from May to December, Csekö aims to celebrate and share immigration stories through art, events, and workshops. The installation invites the community to engage with over 2,000 brightly colored ribbons bearing welcoming messages in multiple languages, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding.

Julia Csekö, a vibrant force in the art community, brings a rich background of experience and activism to Salem. Born to Brazilian parents in Colorado and raised in Rio, Brazil, Csekö’s work transcends borders, blending personal narratives with broader social themes. Her journey from participating in cultural policy advocacy in Brazil to being recognized and awarded for her contributions to public art speaks volumes of her passion and dedication to the arts.
