Salem Film Fest (SFF), renowned for its commitment to showcasing the world’s most compelling independent documentaries, is excited to announce the dates for its 17th edition: March 21-24, 2024. Since its inception in 2007, SFF has established itself as the largest international documentary film festival in Massachusetts, bringing together filmmakers and audiences on Boston’s North Shore to celebrate the art of documentary filmmaking.

Produced by the non-profit entity, Salem Community Arts Center, Inc., and powered largely by a dedicated team of volunteers, SFF is more than a film festival; it’s a community event that fosters connection, understanding, and a global perspective under the mission “Come to Salem, see the world.”

Tickets available on the Salem Film Fest site.

A Return to In-Person Screenings

This year, we’re thrilled to return to an all in-person screening format, promising an immersive festival experience with filmmaker Q&As, parties, and other special events. Screenings and events will take place from March 21 to 24 at various venues across Salem, Massachusetts, offering a unique opportunity for film enthusiasts to engage directly with the creative minds behind some of the most insightful documentaries of our time.

Spotlight on 2024 Highlights (These are the films that the Creative Collective team has on their “must watch” list!)

The 2024 Salem Film Fest lineup includes a diverse selection of documentaries that promise to enlighten, inspire, and entertain:

  • Anyuka: Dive into the multi-generational saga of “Anyuka,” a touching exploration of family, survival, and legacy through the eyes of a daughter discovering her grandmother’s remarkable life as a writer, WWII refugee, and Holocaust survivor.
  • Maestra: Witness the groundbreaking journey of five women from across the globe, who converge in Paris for ‘La Maestra’—the world’s only competition for female conductors—breaking barriers and showcasing their singular talent.
  • The Nita & Zita Project: Uncover the dazzling yet challenging world of burlesque through the lives of two Jewish immigrant sisters, Nita and Zita, who became burlesque legends, challenging stereotypes and gender norms along their path to stardom.
  • Queendom: Follow the story of Gena, a queer Russian artist using her radical performances to confront societal norms, advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and redefine beauty and queerness through her evocative art.
  • Break the Game: Jane M. Wagner’s “Break the Game” presents the gripping story of Narcissa Wright, a gamer navigating the complexities of identity and acceptance in the digital realm. This documentary transcends the boundaries of gaming to explore themes of resilience, LGBTQ+ issues, and mental health. It’s an essential viewing for anyone interested in the challenges and triumphs of online community and digital creators.
  • Call Me Dancer: directed by Leslie Shampaine & Pip Gilmour, showcases the inspirational journey of Manish Chauhan, a Mumbai street dancer, under the mentorship of a seasoned Israeli ballet master. This film celebrates the power of dance and mentorship, highlighting the universal language of artistic expression that transcends cultural divides.
