Essex County’s rich Revolutionary War heritage takes center stage next summer as Gloucester prepares to host a national commemoration event that will bring history dramatically to life. Battle of Bunker Hill 250th Anniversary
One of the American Revolution’s most significant battles will be commemorated spectacularly when the 250th-anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Bunker Hill comes to Gloucester’s Stage Fort Park on June 21-22, 2025.
This landmark event, organized by Essex Heritage in partnership with Revolution 250 and numerous local organizations, promises to transform the scenic coastal park into an immersive historical experience. It will include battle demonstrations, educational programs, and living history displays featuring hundreds of reenactors from across North America.
Why Gloucester for a Charlestown Battle?
While the Battle of Bunker Hill was fought initially in Charlestown, modern urban development makes staging a large-scale reenactment at the original site impossible. Gloucester’s historic Stage Fort Park offers the perfect alternative with its natural terrain features closely resembling the Charlestown Peninsula where the battle was fought.
“Gloucester’s Stage Fort Park offers key elements that perfectly capture the topography needed to tell the complete story of the Battle of Bunker Hill,” explains Jonathan Lane, Executive Director of Revolution 250. “The park’s beaches allow us to recreate the British landing, while the natural elevation provides space for the fortified redoubt central to the battle.”
Essex County’s Deep Revolutionary Connections
Many visitors may not realize Gloucester’s direct connection to the battle itself. Dozens of Gloucester citizens answered the call to defend American liberty in June 1775, with many serving in Captain John Row’s Company and other Essex County units.
Annie Harris, Essex Heritage CEO, notes: “Gloucester sent dozens of its sons to fight at Bunker Hill, including members of the Tarr, Riggs, and Lane families whose descendants still call the city home today. The Gloucester community’s sailors, fishermen, and tradesmen brought valuable skills to the provincial forces.”
The event will highlight these local connections, including the remarkable story of Jabez Tarr, a 15-year-old Gloucester resident who fought in the redoubt at Bunker Hill. “Jabez Tarr’s story reminds us that the American Revolution was fought by people of all ages, including teenagers who risked everything for liberty,” notes Brent “Ringo” Tarr, a direct descendant of the young soldier.
A Revolutionary Experience By Land and Sea
Its comprehensive approach to bringing history to life across multiple dimensions sets this reenactment apart. Visitors will witness:
- Historical Encampments: Separate American Provincial and British Regular camps where visitors can interact with living historians
- Battle Recreations: Multiple scenarios culminating with three assaults on the recreated fortified Bunker Hill
- Amphibious Landing: British troops landing on Half Moon Beach with support from period ships
- 1775 Marketplace: A recreation of a Boston marketplace with sutlers and local vendors
- Educational Programs: Tours, lectures, and presentations highlighting the contributions of all who fought for liberty, including women, Indigenous communities, and free and enslaved Black soldiers
Perhaps most exciting is the maritime component, with efforts underway to charter period-appropriate vessels that will participate in recreating the British siege and landing. Visitors may even have the opportunity to purchase charters aboard local Gloucester schooners during the event, witnessing reenactment history from the water.
“The amphibious landing of British troops is a central element of the battle reenactment,” says Michael DeKoster, Executive Director of Maritime Gloucester. “Having traditional ships in Gloucester Harbor will not only create a spectacular visual element of cannon fire and maritime troop movement but will allow us to portray how the British forces arrived at Charlestown accurately.”

Supporting This Historic Commemoration
The event is expected to draw between 5,000 and 7,000 visitors over the weekend, providing a significant economic boost to Gloucester and surrounding North Shore communities. Visitors are encouraged to extend their stay to explore the region’s rich heritage, beautiful beaches, vibrant arts scene, and culinary offerings.
Those wishing to support this landmark event can purchase limited-edition Battle of Bunker Hill 250th Anniversary Challenge Coins for $25 through the event website. Several sponsorship levels are also available for businesses and organizations looking to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime historical commemoration.
