In your words… Tell us about your organization, business, initiative.

Being one of Salem’s oldest retailers, Coon’s Card and Gift Shop has a long standing tradition of providing Salem residents and visitors alike with unique gifts, affordable souvenirs, a huge selection of discounted greeting cards and friendly customer service. This is something Karen Davis has worked diligently to continue over the years since taking ownership in 2002. Coon’s was originally established in 1953 as a jewelry store by its founding owner, Arthur Coon. Over the last six decades it has changed locations several times throughout the city, each time expanding and growing into the eclectic gift shop it is today. Coon’s is the home of Penelope’s Pet Boutique which merged into the shop in 2014, supplying Salem with a variety of pet apparel, gifts, toys and locally baked treats.

Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do? Share your passions for your business, initiative, organization.

Karen has been in retail all her life, working for others while learning the basics of owning and operating a business. In 2002, Coon’s was purchased with a co-owner and after 10 years, Karen became sole owner, giving her the opportunity and freedom to incorporate her personal style and expertise into the vision she holds for her store. As a successful business owner, Karen infuses her spiritual and creative energies into offering products that not only makes your trip to Salem memorable but also allows you to enhance your life. With the belief that what you put out into the world comes back to you, you can positively impact others by offering the best version of you.

What role do you think your business plays in supporting a more creative community? OR your community in general. (Bonus! Why do you think a more creative community is important?)

The decision to completely remodel the store in 2018 was an opportunity to personally channel my creativity and watch my vision come to life. This has inspired me to continue with the vision I hold in bringing more magic into people’s lives. You can find one of a kind products from local as well as world wide artists, and are open to other inspired creations. We currently employ two recent graduates from Montserrat Collage of Art who bring a wealth of fresh and creative energy. Supporting the community in general is always something we have done here at Coon’s.

What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you our your business?

I was the starting pitcher for the Saugus High School Softball team the Saugus Sachems
