In your own words, tell us about your business, organization, or initiative.

The Firehouse has been the heart of the North Shore community for over 200 years; this historic building housing the old fire house was a focal point of cultural and intellectual thought even in its earliest days. In 1991, the Firehouse Center for the Arts was born, reinvigorating the site as a hub that celebrates the artistic expression and passion of our community.

Today, our 191-seat theatre continues to bring live theatre, comedy, music and family programming to audiences of all ages in an intimate, welcoming and affordable setting. The Firehouse presents over 170 performances every season, and welcomes over 25,000 patrons into our theatre each year. Plus, our education program serves an estimated 5,000 members of our community ages 3-17 and 55+, giving them the opportunity to find their voice on our stage.

Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do. Share your passions for your business, organization, or initiative.
I’m Emma Cahoon, I am the Marketing & Communications Coordinator for the Firehouse. I started in April of this year and since then I’ve taken over all marketing operations, and have the honor of playing a big role in the organization’s programming and productions as well. I was originally drawn to the Firehouse because of its reputation for being a community driven organization at heart, and a few months in, I can say with confidence that that is still very true. It’s been amazing to be embraced by the strong community in Newburyport and to continue to serve them in every choice we make.
What is the last thing you read, watched, or listened to that had an impact on you?
I am currently reading Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson which I can tell is going to become an all-time favorite, and of course I loved season 4 of The Bear.
What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you or your business?
We have over 75 individual performances scheduled on stage from now (end of August) through the end of December! There’s always something to see at the Firehouse. I’m especially excited for Spookley the Square Pumpkin the Musical, which I am directing, and for the Theatre in the Open Christmas Panto!
