In your words… Tell us about your organization, business, initiative.

Through Flourish I provide purposeful artistic services, pieces, and installations that enhance the character and values of a business or community while also promoting natural growth. I focus mainly on realistic mural paintings, chalkboard art (both permanent and residual), and lettering. I am NOT a designer, I am an artist that uses principles of design to create meaningful works of art.

Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do? Share your passions for your business, initiative, organization.

My life purpose revolves are passion for art and creativity. I have been a vigorous illustrator for close to 8 years with an extensive portfolio and background in photorealism. I love drawing, but it is very isolating and personal, I needed to find balance with my other passions of mural painting and lettering. My goals developed into a purpose of being a part of the creative community in ways that were not just on paper. I am extremely passionate about both small and large scale art, and the use of it to create needed value to businesses and communities, which is why I created Flourish.

What role do you think your business plays in supporting a more creative community? OR your community in general. (Bonus! Why do you think a more creative community is important?)

Visual art has the power to connect and inspire the masses on a level that words alone simply can not. It makes you think, reflect, and revel in the present moment. The ultimate goal of my business is to provide the artistic services necessary to make a community “flourish”. Turning a blank wall into a beautiful mural masterpiece, or adding creative life to local businesses through beautiful hand-lettering are small measures that cultivate large impact. Creativity in communities is not just important, it is a necessity, it is a force of unity.

What was the last book you read that made an impact on you?

I recently read Tim Ferris’ book “The Four Hour Work Week” which, in sum, is not about working only four hours a week, but using strategy to minimize the distraction of anything that does not truly matter to your life purpose and desires. For me, this book helped me form a mindset that I can start a business that allows me to fulfill all of passions, gives me room to still draw as much as I need, and connect to people who want my art and want to benefit from creativity.

What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you our your business?

This business was an accident of sorts, meaning I truly never thought I would end up making a business model out of things I’ve been passionate about since childhood, let alone be painting large-scale murals! I have always, always, been passionate about handwriting to the point of neurosis since I was old enough to write my name. It was just so fun to me, I was enamored with fact that I could create so many different versions of letters and words, I would even (embarrassingly) attempt to copy the handwriting of my classmates by studying the way they held their pencil and formed their letters. To say the least, I was a very observant kid, with a strange knack for forgery. Thus, years later, at one of my first jobs I was paid to write the specials boards weekly because of my flexible handwriting and obsession with fonts. About two months into it, I was asked to paint several murals (some with letters, some without) and I fell in love with that. Shortly after I realized that I could offer these services to many, many other businesses and communities other than my home town. A year and a half later and I’m building this business from the ground up!
