In your own words, tell us about your business, organization, or initiative.
My name is Miriam Shechet and I am the cofounder and a perfumer for LabHouse. After working in the larger industry for a few years, my business partner Macaul Neenan and I started our perfumery as a way to have creative freedom in our fragrance formulation. We love to share our olfactive art through our own perfume brand and in collaborations with other businesses. Our formula style is characterized by bold and distinct notes and longevity. We are so thrilled to meet more cool business owners with the Creative Collective!
Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do. Share your passions for your business, organization, or initiative.
My passion for perfumery started with an introduction to organic chemistry at 21. Understanding the world from the molecular level made fragrance feel like attainable magic. Each molecule stimulating the sensation of a delightful new aroma. As someone who loves to paint, I had to find a way to create with this new medium and share my olfactive visions. Enjoying fragrance is a way of slowing down life. I think the saying goes : “Stop and smell the roses”.
What is the last thing you read, watched, or listened to that had an impact on you?
At LabHouse, we have always been inspired by the story of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. A story of one man’s mission to bring joy to people using the olfactory senses. I was recently touched by the conclusion of the new movie: It’s not about the chocolate, it’s about the people you share it with. Very applicable to life in general.
What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you or your business?
LabHouse started in a basement as a subscription box where I tried to teach people perfumery. We have since then rebranded three times in just two years and completely changed the trajectory of our goals. It’s crazy how often small businesses have to pivot.
