In your words… Tell us about your organization, business, initiative.

Landworks Studio is an award winning landscape architecture firm based in Salem, MA. We develop innovative landscapes using the most current technologies and design expertise to create environments that elevates the natural identity of each public realm. Our focus is on creating memorable, functional and sustainable spaces for the people who utilize them most.

Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do? Share your passions for your business, initiative, organization.

The work we do as landscape architects allows us to have a positive impact on the community by creating usable outdoor spaces. We have the unique opportunity to work with the environment rather than against it. At Landworks, we have a particular focus on making artwork publicly accessible to everyone and we strive create spaces that people can interact with in a meaningful way.

What role do you think your business plays in supporting a more creative community? OR your community in general.

Our new studio situated within the North River Corridor Canal Overlay District in downtown Salem, MA presents us a with a unique opportunity to engage more closely with the creative community. Our goal is to establish a campus that melds different artistic practices and fosters curiosity, exploration, teaching, learning, discussion and discovery. We welcome participation from the entire community and look forward to hosting a series of events, lectures, exhibitions and performances in the very near future.

What was the last book you read that made an impact on you?

I recently watched a lecture on climate positive design presented by Pamela Conrad, Principle Architect at CMG Landscape Architecture, who along with an incredible team, developed an app called Pathfinder that helps architectures reduce the carbon footprints of their design. Pathfinder is an incredible resource that allows anyone to actively contribute to climate change solutions. Such important topic that directly impacts the future of our work.

What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you our your business?

A fun fact that we learned recently is that if you cut off a branch of a Magnolia Tree in the middle of winter it can still bloom! We had several branches that flowered inside our studio in the middle of January!
