About Mental Makeover

Mental Makeover is a 501(c)(3) mental health nonprofit based in Salem, Massachusetts, committed to fighting stigma and empowering young people to learn about, talk about, and take ownership of their mental health. Entirely volunteer-led and grassroots in nature, the organization changes the WAY through Wellness, Awareness, and Youth education. Furthermore, its RAISE framework — Recognize, Accept, Inspire, Self-Awareness, and Educate — guides every program and initiative it delivers.

Our Experience

Since 2021, Mental Makeover has grown from a grassroots idea into a recognized community organization with a growing roster of events, education programs, and resource initiatives across the North Shore. The all-volunteer team brings personal passion and lived experience to every project. Additionally, strong community partnerships amplify its reach and deepen its impact year after year.

Youth Mental Health Education

Early education is the foundation for lifelong mental wellness. The Understanding Emotions education box provides youth, families, teachers, and counselors with interactive tools and activities designed to spark open, genuine conversations about mental health. Moreover, these resources complement — rather than replace — existing social-emotional learning programs already in schools.

Mental Makeover Education & Resource Boxes

Two signature resource boxes put support directly in the hands of those who need it most:

• Understanding Emotions Box — Interactive mental health education tools for youth and trusted adults
• The World Needs You Here Box — Coping tools and resources for individuals experiencing mental health struggles, especially those waiting for professional services

Both boxes reflect the belief that everyone deserves access to mental health support — not just a hotline number.

The Mental Makeover TWNYH Walk

The annual “The World Needs You Here” Walk is a signature community event held each summer at Salem Common. Participants choose between a 5K walk or an inclusive half-mile walk and roll, coming together to share stories, honor lives lost to suicide, and remind one another that they are not alone. In addition, the event features speakers, vendors, food, games, and activities for all ages.

Freezin for a Reason Polar Plunge

Each winter, the Freezin for a Reason Polar Plunge takes place at Winter Island Park in Salem — an energetic community fundraiser where participants take a cold-water plunge to raise awareness for mental health programming. Consequently, what starts as a chilly challenge becomes a powerful statement about getting comfortable with the uncomfortable — much like talking about mental health itself.

Mental Makeover Healing Heroes

The Healing Heroes program invites monthly donors to become a sustained part of the mission. Contributions fund education boxes, community programming, and scholarships created in memory of those lost to suicide. Moreover, members receive welcome gifts, monthly impact updates, and exclusive access to organizational events and leadership.

What Makes Mental Makeover Special

This organization is entirely volunteer-driven — every person involved gives their time out of genuine commitment to the cause. Programs meet young people and communities where they are, combining education, resources, and joyful events to make mental health conversations more accessible and less intimidating. Additionally, deeply personal community roots give the work an authenticity that resonates across every program delivered.
