The Salem Arts Association is delighted to unveil two new exhibitions, “Inspired by PEM” and “Minimalism,” both made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM). These exhibitions open a window to the vibrant local art scene, offering a fresh perspective on contemporary and minimalist art.
Exhibition Highlights
1. Inspired by PEM
The 18th Annual PEM Inspirational Exhibition, aptly titled “Inspired by PEM,” draws from the themes of the Peabody Essex Museum’s latest showcase, “Our Time on Earth.” This exhibition runs from February 17 to June 9, 2024, and features artworks that explore the intersection of science, nature, and sustainability. The artists, inspired by the possibility of a sustainable future, use their pieces to provoke thoughts on the delicate interplay between humanity and our natural world.
Esteemed Guest Jurors:
- Trevor Smith: Associate Director – Multisensory Experience and Curator of the Present Tense, PEM
- Jane Winchell: Director of PEM’s Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center and Curator of Natural History
2. Minimalism
Following the reflective depth of “Inspired by PEM,” the “Minimalism” exhibit strips down artistic expression to its core. This movement, which began in the 1950s in the US and later captured a global audience, emphasizes simplicity and directness. Salem Arts’ minimalist exhibition showcases local artists who embody the “What you see is what you get” philosophy, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty in simplicity.
