Salem Goes to the Dogs: Howl-o-ween Pet Parade and Historic First Dog Mayor Election Celebrate Community Spirit
Local nonprofit Salem Main Streets brings neighbors together for furry fun while supporting downtown revitalization
Salem, Massachusetts – In a city known for its historic charm and October festivities, something delightfully different is happening this fall. Salem Main Streets is proving that community building can be both impactful and adorable with two interconnected events: the return of the Howl-o-ween Pet Parade on October 11 and the city’s very first Dog Mayor election, with results announced October 7.
These aren’t just cute photo opportunities—they’re locally driven initiatives that strengthen downtown Salem while bringing neighbors together in celebration of the four-legged (and sometimes scaled or feathered) members of our community.
Democracy Gets Fuzzy: Salem’s Historic First Dog Mayor
In what might be Salem’s most enthusiastic election ever, 70 civic-minded local pets are vying for the coveted position of Dog Mayor. This first-time fundraiser for Salem Main Streets has captured the imagination of the community, with hundreds of individual donors casting their votes—one dollar equals one vote—to support the nonprofit’s year-round work.
The stakes are real, even if the candidates are adorable. All funds raised directly support Salem Main Streets’ mission of providing free business support and event assistance to the downtown community, along with producing beloved free community events throughout the year.
And yes, despite the title, the race is delightfully inclusive. As the FAQ playfully notes: “May I have another species as a candidate? We will not stop you from being a rebel for a cause (especially since the cause is us!)”
The winning candidate will be announced on October 7th and will receive the honor of leading the 2025 Howl-o-ween Pet Parade just four days later. The campaign has been made possible by lead sponsors Badabing Barbershop and Shave Parlor and Jenni Stuart Fine Jewelry.
Parade Day: A Community Celebration on Derby Wharf
As Salem Main Streets enthusiastically declares: “Salem is going to the dogs (and cats and lizards and bunnies), and we couldn’t be happier about it!”
The Howl-o-ween Pet Parade returns on Saturday, October 11 at 11 am at Derby Wharf, Salem Maritime National Historic Site. This rain-or-shine event welcomes pets of all species, though organizers note that participants should be well-behaved and comfortable at busy events where many dogs will be present.
The parade kicks off around 11:30 am, with costume judging immediately following—because what’s a pet parade without creative costumes? This year’s event will also serve as the inauguration ceremony for Salem’s newly elected Dog Mayor, adding an extra layer of excitement to the festivities.
Accessible Community Engagement
True to Salem Main Streets’ community-first philosophy, the parade keeps participation accessible. Online pre-registration requests a small donation of $5 for Salem residents and $10 for non-residents, though onsite registration is available starting at 11 am on parade day for those who can’t register in advance.
Every dollar raised goes directly to supporting Salem Main Streets’ special community programs throughout the year—proving that even the smallest contributions to local organizations create ripple effects across the community.
Why Local Matters: The Salem Main Streets Mission
These events exemplify what makes locally driven initiatives so vital. Salem Main Streets operates as a nonprofit dedicated to the continued revitalization of downtown Salem as a vibrant, year-round retail, dining, and cultural destination. The organization provides direct support to downtown businesses and produces numerous community events and initiatives throughout the year, including the Salem Farmers’ Market, Salem Arts Festival, Salem’s So Sweet, and the October Information Booths.
This work happens thanks to the generosity and partnership of the City of Salem and Mayor Dominick Pangallo, Mass Growth Capital Corporation, and crucially, many local business sponsors and community volunteers. Events like the Howl-o-ween Pet Parade aren’t just fun—they’re the lifeblood of a nonprofit that keeps downtown Salem thriving.
Strong Community Support
The 2025 Howl-o-ween Pet Parade is supported by an impressive roster of local businesses who understand the value of investing in community: lead sponsors Salem Bespoke Boutique, VEG ER for Pets, and Jenni Stuart Fine Jewelry, along with A&A Services, All Creatures Veterinary Hospital, Black Cat Tours & Curiosity Shoppe, Die With Your Boots On, Emporium 32, Hawthorne Hotel, Kakawa Chocolate House, King Lewis Engraving and Gifts, Lore Apartments, OctoCog, On the Trail Northshore, Santiago Family Properties, Tails of Salem, Wolf Next Door Coffee, and Yappy Pups Playhouse.
This level of local business participation demonstrates something important: when communities invest in themselves, everyone benefits.
