“SEE ME”: A CELEBRATION OF SALEM PUBLIC SCHOOLS STUDENTS AT THE PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM
Salem, Massachusetts – The Salem Public Schools Office of Public Relations is proud to present “SEE ME”, a multiday pop-up exhibition featuring artwork from Salem students in grades K-12. This public exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum, a world-renowned museum, celebrates the district’s core values of belonging, equity, and opportunity through the expression of student voices. The event will take place from May 19th to May 22nd.
“SEE ME” explores how the young people of Salem see their history and how their cultures have shaped them. It examines how they see themselves walking through the world in the present and how they can influence the future. The exhibition showcases drawings, paintings, photography, poetry, video, and more, displayed throughout the museum.
The celebration includes special events at the Morse Auditorium on Saturday, May 20th. From 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, the Salem Student Voice Project Summit will take place with the theme “Raising the Volume of Student Voice.” The Student Voice Project, an effort to amplify students’ concerns and help them take action to address them, is a partnership between Salem Public Schools and the nonprofit Equity Imperative.
From 1:30-2:45 pm, join us for a community conversation that will feature a “Leveraging the Power of Student Identity and Voice to Transform School Culture” Fireside Chat with Superintendent Dr. Stephen Zrike Jr, SPS Artist-in-Residence & Hip-Hop Performer, Dee-1, Equity Imperative Co-Founder and Director of the Student Voice Project, Judith Diaz-Rodriguez. Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll will give the opening remarks.
Salem residents and SPS staff can attend the event for free. The initiative aims to share elements of how the young people of Salem see their history, and cultures, and how they can influence the future.
“We are excited to showcase the incredible talent of Salem Public Schools students at the Peabody Essex Museum,” said Liz Polay-Wettengel, Chief of Public Relations. “We invite the community to join us in celebrating the student’s voices, perspectives, and talents.”
