The House of the Seven Gables has long inspired writers, starting with Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Write with the Witch City WritersSunday, November 10, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Writers, no need to sneak up to the attic to write, as Nathaniel Hawthorne famously did in Concord. Put that ladder away and head over to The House of the Seven Gables. Writers of all ages and skill levels can count on a quiet, supportive calm with the encouragement of Salem’s Witch City Writers.

Starting at 10 a.m., Sunday, November 10, writers are invited, free of charge, to gather with fellow writers to brainstorm, write, network and share. Witch City Writers and The Gables are making it possible for writers to meet and join a lively, creative community while getting some pages done at the same time. Meet at the Visitor Center, House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby St., Salem. Some parking is available.

The theme, for those looking for a writing prompt, is pop culture, which is also the theme of The Gables’ 2019 exhibition “POP! Goes The Gables” and its slate of annual programming. Jess Haberman, co-founder of Witch City Writers, says that pop culture can help or hinder writing. “Pop-cultural references are often useful when setting a scene,” she says. Haberman and her team will provide examples of successful uses of pop culture, along with cases where references date the writing.

Haberman says the event is intended to connect writers within the local communities. “It’s a chance to take back the town after October and Halloween, to get out of hibernation and spend some time on your writing project,” she says. Members of the North Shore’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) will be in attendance, as well, to talk briefly about the international novel-writing-in-a-month exercise taking place in November. This active group also meets year-round and welcomes new members.

All writers need to do on Sunday, November 10, is show up. Writing of any genre is welcome. And writing materials will be made available, although participants are free to bring tablets or laptops, pens and paper.

Free admission for VeteransMonday, November 11, all day

Veterans need only bring military ID on Monday, November 11, to be granted free admission to The House of the Seven Gables. Active members of the military may present their military ID and receive the military discount for a guided tour of The House of the Seven Gables at any time the property is open to the public.
