About MVP Arts
MVP Arts — Music, Movement, Visual and Performing Arts — is the creative practice of Lynn-based drummer, percussionist, and teaching artist Shira Moss. With a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art and decades of experience as a performer and educator, Shira offers drum and percussion instruction, community drum circles, and live performance across the North Shore and Greater Boston. Furthermore, through her work with several accomplished ensembles, Shira brings a wide range of musical styles and traditions to festivals, gallery openings, fundraisers, and community events.
Our Experience
Shira spent fifteen years as a K-8 Visual and Performing Arts teacher before redirecting her focus toward performing and teaching percussion full-time. Since then she has studied with numerous mentors, expanded her repertoire across multiple genres and traditions, and built long-term collaborative relationships with formally trained musicians. Additionally, her performance work spans world music, jazz-blues fusion, rock, blues, and folk — giving her the flexibility to serve a wide variety of events and audiences.
Core Offerings
- Private drum and percussion instruction for all ages and levels
- Community drum circles for groups, events, and organizations
- Live performance for arts festivals, gallery openings, fundraisers, and celebrations
- Percussion workshops and educational programming
Drum Instruction
Shira teaches drums and percussion to students of all ages and experience levels, drawing on decades of study with numerous mentors and a background in arts education. Lessons are rooted in a broad range of traditions — from jazz and rock to world music and hand percussion — tailored to each student’s goals and interests. In addition, Shira’s background as a longtime classroom arts educator gives her a patient, effective, and deeply personalized approach to teaching.
Drum Circles
MVP Arts offers community drum circles for a wide range of settings — wellness events, school programs, corporate gatherings, celebrations, and more. Drum circles are an accessible and joyful way to bring people together through rhythm, requiring no prior musical experience. Consequently, they are a wonderful addition to community events and organizational programming of all kinds.
Shira’s Musical Projects
In addition to her teaching work, Shira is an active performing musician with three ensembles on the North Shore:
- Steve Tapper and Shira Moss — Flute and Percussion Duo — A world music-inspired duo drawing from Latin American, African, Middle Eastern, Asian, and American roots traditions, ranging from abstract and contemplative to whimsical and danceable
- Obscure Notation — A jazz-blues fusion ensemble blending classic and original repertoire inspired by ECM artists and jazz and blues innovators, featuring Berklee-trained musicians
- Seawitch — A four-piece cover band spanning decades of rock, blues, pop, and folk with broad audience appeal
What Makes MVP Arts Special
Shira Moss brings something rare to the North Shore — a performer and educator equally at home in world music, jazz fusion, and rock, who approaches every teaching moment and every performance with the same genuine care for her students and her community. She believes music is a multi-modal expressive language that holds the power to inspire, empower, and connect — and every live performance and drum circle is a unique opportunity to bring that power to life.
