About Us
Salt Studio Space is a creative hub in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where makers of all ages and experience levels can take classes, attend creative events, and create. The Studio Story
Salt Studio was founded by Alice Rouse, whose career path has wound from landscape architecture to brand design at Converse, to teaching at Boston University, Suffolk University, and Ipswich High School. Alice’s love for making began in middle school, sitting on the couch with her mother making jewelry and learning to work with wire and finishing tools. This early passion led to an unease with the perceived exclusivity of the ‘Art’ community and its disregard for certain types of creativity. Alice believes that working with our hands to actually make something unlocks a special feeling that cannot be recreated. It was this intuition—that people needed a more open and approachable entry to creative community—that inspired Salt Studio. Her background in landscape architecture and sustainability has influenced the studio’s curriculum and the shop’s purchasing decisions, weaving sustainability throughout everything Salt Studio does. Alice lives in Ipswich with her husband Alex and two little makers, Luna and Leo, and can often be found teaching workshops and minding the shop.
