Essex Heritage Presents “The Great Debate Part 2: Patriots & Loyalists”

If you could travel back to 1773, would you join the revolutionary Patriots or remain a loyal British subject? This fascinating question will take center stage at Essex Heritage’s upcoming event, “The Great Debate Part 2: Patriots & Loyalists” on Tuesday, May 6th.

A Historical Showdown

Two distinguished historians will passionately argue opposing sides of the American Revolution. David Goss will defend the often-misunderstood Loyalist perspective, while Charlie Newhall champions the Patriot cause that ultimately shaped our nation.

The debate recreates the pivotal question that divided communities and even families: fight for independence or remain loyal to the Crown?

More Than Just Taxes

While taxes often dominate discussions about Revolutionary causes, both historians will explore deeper themes including representation, human rights, and visions for America’s future.

Goss argues that Loyalists weren’t traitors but pragmatic citizens who recognized their advantageous position within the British Empire. They enjoyed greater freedoms and paid lower taxes than their British counterparts while benefiting from military protection.

Newhall counters that Patriots recognized fundamental freedoms required bold action when peaceful petitions repeatedly failed. Their courage established liberty principles that continue to inspire freedom movements worldwide.

Acknowledging Complexity

The debate will also examine Revolutionary-era contradictions – particularly how liberty rhetoric coexisted with slavery and the exclusion of women, Indigenous peoples, and those without property from the equality vision.

This honest examination acknowledges our complex history, including voices whose struggles for liberty continued long after 1776.
