In your words… Tell us about your organization, business, initiative.

Third Wheel is an independent, full service bike shop in Beverly MA, specializing in commuter & lifestyle biking, as well as vintage refurbs and custom builds.

We believe biking is for everyone.

Our goal in opening the shop was to create an inclusive and welcoming space for all types of riders – whether you are brand new to riding, a casual “bike to the brewery” rider, or an urban adventure cyclist. We aim to build community through biking, and we hope you will join us!

Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do? Share your passions for your business, initiative, organization.

We are passionate about creating a space for bikers that don’t feel like they fit in other “bike spaces”. Biking culture, particularly on the north shore, can be competitive and exclusive. Our belief is that biking should be accessible and inclusive – and can be more than just an elite hobby for those willing and able to spend thousands of dollars. We see bikes as art – whether we are bringing an old junked 80s frame back to life or creating the custom build of someone’s dreams, we are passionate about creating something unique and exactly right for the rider. We also believe in being sustainable – the bike industry has a very “throwaway” mindset, but we are determined to keep older frames out of landfills and on the road.

What role do you think your business plays in supporting a more creative community? OR your community in general. (Bonus! Why do you think a more creative community is important?)

We consider ourselves creators! We arent just selling new bikes out of box, we are sourcing vintage and/or boutique frames and choosing components that create a specific style of bike. We love working with customers on creating the bike of their dreams – even if they don’t know what that looks like yet. And we love our fellow local creatives! We work with local artists – for our branding, merchandise design, shop murals and artwork – and are constantly looking for ways we can support one another, through popups (hosting our Winter Market) or promotion. Promoting a more creative community is so important because this is what crafts the soul of a community.

What was the last book you read OR What was the last video you watched that made an impact on you?

The Creative Act: A Way of Being – Rick Rubin

What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you or your business?

My background is in accounting, and Trey’s background is in documentary film! Hence, we opened a bike shop 🙂
