The newly reopened Cinema Salem in Salem’s downtown district hosted a special screening of IN THE HEIGHTS, from the creator of HAMILTON and the director of CRAZY RICH ASIANS on Saturday, June 12th. The screening was accompanied by a themed performance from North Shore Latinx-led performance troupe Cojuelous Productions, who partnered with Creative Collective for the event.
The event also welcomed Jorge Arce and Sandra Marcelino for a Bomba y plena presentation, a percussion-driven musical tradition from Puerto Rico that moves people to dance. In addition to the screening and performance, the event also featured gorgeous artwork from Dominican Artist Ramon Santiago, currently based in Lynn Ma.
IN THE HEIGHTS, billed as “The Move Event of the Summer,” invites viewers to the place where streets are made of music and little dreams become big… “In the Heights.” Lights up on Washington Heights…The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community.
At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life. “In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.
