About Oldies but Ghoulies Edition
Sevening (v.): the act of showing up after seven(ish), for your people, your community, and honestly yourself in Essex County. New here? Respect your elders, honeys, and go meet the o.g. in our About Time Edition. They’re a classic, they’re vintage, and they’re aging like a fine w(h)ine. Go take a peek. We’ll wait. We’re old hands at it.
Oh hey there, Essex County. Remember the good old days? Breaking news, honeys. They’re this week.
The (s)evening shift dug through the attic, blew off the dust, and found nothing but golden ghoulies. Antique? Yes. Antiquated? Never. We don’t get old. We get re-released. Last week, Essex County went door to door and cleaned out the candy bowl: pet portraits, clay desserts, a haunted parade, the Topsfield Fair, a woman in black, dueling pianos, and more. Pillowcases? Full. Sugar crash? Never heard of her.
But honeys, October in Essex County is where the classics come out to slay, and everything old is boo again. Oldies but ghoulies, every last one. The oldest game in the tavern, with tacos. Pottery, glassblowing, and pumpkin carving, three crafts with serious seniority. Centuries of Salem gossip on a trolley. Classic hits with a live band, the classic art of the tease, and parlor magic in a historic reading room. 90s goth, 80s metal, and two monsters from 1931 who refuse to retire. Let’s be vintage. Vintage never goes out of style, honeys. It just goes out sevening. So get ghoulish and going, we’re not getting any younger (only maybe yeonger. teeheehee.).

Trivia Taco Tuesday at 7:00 PM
Honeys, the oldest game in the tavern still has all the answers. The Bell Inn & Tavern rings in trivia with $3 tacos all night, so the Bell tolls for thee and thy appetite. Assemble your smartest friend, your loudest friend, and that one friend who peaked in the 90s. Old facts, old feuds, fresh tortillas. Don’t get salsa-y when you lose, and nacho average excuses. It happens every week, so lettuce see you. Pick a team name that makes the host blush. Let’s taco ’bout the good old days. Age before beauty, shall we?

Leaf Lantern Painting Night at 6:00 PM
Wick-ed good times ahead. Pottery is humanity’s original craft night, and Hestia Creations is keeping the tradition totally lit. Grab a brush in the Paint Your Own Pottery Studio and turn a seasonal leaf lantern into a fall fantasy with specialty glazes or your own design. Don’t leaf it to chance, honeys. Branch out. Come solo or bring the whole coven, plus snacks and refreshments. Be-leaf in yourself. You’ll be kiln it.

Tales & Tombstones at 7:00 PM
Salem has centuries of gossip, and honeys, none of it is dead. The ghosts are mischievous, malevolent, and a little grave about it. Dead tired. When dusk hits, the city of seafarers and architecture slips into the shadows, and an older Salem steps out. Hop aboard with Salem Trolley for grisly murders, ghastly executions, haunted hotels, forgotten underground passageways, ancient curses, ghost ships, and haunted islands. The plots thicken. So do the plots. You’ll be dying to go, and it’s a trolley good time. Tomb it may concern: we’re soooo in.
Live Band Karaoke with The Inbetweeners at 8:00 PM
Ever dreamed of fronting a real rock band? Don’t fret. Dust off that dream, honeys, because this is your big band theory. Off Cabot hands you the mic with The Inbetweeners, a live band playing rock, pop, and classic hits while you serve lead singer realness. No cheesy backing tracks. Just you and a golden oldie you’ve rehearsed in the shower since middle school. Stay sharp, never flat. Too shy? Cheer from that cozy, hip room. This October show is the Halloween version, a tad eerier than you remember. Mic drop, queen.
Burlesque at 8:30 PM
The tease is a classic for a reason and we’re huge fans. Literally, there are fans. Werk. Seacoast Stilettos teaches the art of burlesque in a weekly signature class blending playful reveal, sultry technique, and performance-quality movement. Fan work? Glove peels? Obviously. It fits like a glove. Old-school glamour with instructor Mollie in a body-positive, all-levels space. Wear whatever makes you feel confident: athleisure, lingerie, or anything in between. Knee pads encouraged, heels optional, which is the bare minimum. Walk in a blooming bud, strut out a vintage vixen. No strings attached. Okay, maybe tassels.

Adults Only Pumpkin Carving at 7:00 PM
Oh my gourd. This tradition is older than your grandmother’s candy dish, and it’s grown folks only. Granite Coast Brewing hosts an adults-only pumpkin carving night, so carve out time, honeys. Squash your doubts. Give her cheekbones. Give her a snatched jawline. Give her a smirk that says she knows what you did last October. Carve, queen, carve. It takes guts, and you’ll have plenty. Grab a pint and a carving tool, and don’t mix up which hand holds which. Something’s brewing, and it’s gourd-geous.
Everything Dies W\special guests Dream Evil at 9:30 PM
The 90s called, honeys, and they want their eyeliner back. Too bad. Koto welcomes back Everything Dies, the self-proclaimed least worst Type O tribute, and that’s our type, positively. Opening is special guest Dream Evil, a tribute to Ronnie James Dio, so say adios to your hearing and Dio mio to your neck. Horns up early, horns up late. Two tributes, one stage, and proof the classics never stay buried. It’s 21+ and sells out every year, so don’t be negative, be early. Oldies? Sure. But heavy metal ages like a fine w(h)ine. Gloom service.

Salem Glass Pumpkin Patch at 11:00 AM
Glassblowing is an ancient art, and yes, she has aged beautifully. Clearly. The Salem Glass Pumpkin Patch by North Shore Glass School has hundreds of one-of-a-kind glass pumpkins, each handmade in Salem on Gallows Hill. We’re blown away. The patch is growing: more local glass art, plus the launch of the Salem Glass Witch Ball Co. and its first witch balls. Guest makers include Gold Coast Glass, Vesper Glassworks, Sins and Scents, and Wicked Ghost Hunters. Free, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. No pane, all gain. Find your forever gourd.
Misfortune: Salem’s Parlor Magic Experience at 7:00 PM
Feeling lucky, punk? I mean, honeys. Careful how you answer. Misfortune is an hour-long theatrical magic show conjured by Evan Northrup Magic, walking the eerie line between superstition and luck with immersive storytelling and sleight-of-hand. Just wand-erful. It’s old-school parlor magic in the historic reading room at the Salem Athenaeum, so yes, we are reading the room. Oldest trick in the book. Seating is intentionally limited, so don’t disappear on us. Cards on the table, it’s intended for adults; the curious aged 13 and over are welcome. Abraca-don’t miss it.

Dracula (1931) & Frankenstein (1931) Double Feature at 6:00 PM
Fang-tastic sevening. The original oldies but ghoulies, honeys. Two icons, one screen, 95 years young, and still serving. Necks, mostly. The Cabot celebrates the anniversary of two horror movies on the big screen. Bela Lugosi as the dashing Count Dracula, fresh from Transylvania, and you can Count on him to set his sights on Mina while Van Helsing stakes his claim. A real pain in the neck. Then Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster, a bolt from the blue with a stitch in time. He’s a-parts from the rest. 10 minute intermission between films. Fangs for the memories. It’s alive!
Consider this your heirloom, honeys. Ten antiques, zero dust. We polished every one until we could see our own reflection, then got distracted for twenty minutes. Worth it.
Old school or ghoul school? Both. Around seven(ish). Obviously. Seven(ish) is the new old-fashioned, honeys. That’s just some of what’s sevening this week. The full lineup lives on the calendar, and it’s the whole Essex County situation and beyond. And psst, the Topsfield Fair is still going through October 12, and that’s fair game. CC members, got something sevening? Submit a member marketing request and make your event an instant classic. We see you.
Not on the newsletter yet? That’s the one classic you really can’t skip. Fix that. Old news is good news. And follow us on the socials, @creativecollectivema and @creativecollectiveexplores, both, every week, no exceptions.
Until next week, Essex County. The nights are long, the classics are calling, and you only get better with age. Stay sevening. You know where to find us. We’re everywhere, and we’re not getting any younger (or yeonger). Just ghoul-der.
– (unforever) yeong and the (s)evening shift, out. Back in our day, we walked to sevenings uphill both ways. In heels.
