About Spellbound Edition
Sevening (v.): the act of showing up after seven(ish), for your people, your community, and honestly yourself in Essex County. New here? Don’t stand there looking bewitched, honeys. The original incantation lives in our About Time Edition, and it’s the spell that started it all. Read it, learn it, live it. We’ll keep the cauldron warm.
Oh hey there, Essex County. Feeling a little enchanted? Good. That means it’s working.
The (s)evening shift gazed into the crystal ball, and honeys, the forecast is bewitching. Last week, Essex County put in a full boo-dy of work: an open mic, watercolor cards, a Dracula speakeasy, 2,000 pumpkin heads on a hill, Scream Queens in drag, a paranormal investigation, and more than you could shake a leg at. Head to toe? Covered. Every last bone? Accounted for.
But the countdown to Halloween is officially on, and Essex County is casting spells left and right. This week, everybody’s spellbound. Three sisters in ink and watercolor. A tarot deck conjured entirely in front of a camera. Magic Hunks making shirts disappear. Cryptids in drag, a costume bash in heels, four bands in one cauldron, and more, conjured on command. So grab your broom, honeys, and fly out the door (yeong’s is already double-parked. teeheehee.).

Hocus Pocus Paint Night with Rob Lynch at 7:00 PM
Far From the Tree is casting a spell and the Sanderson Sisters are the guests of honor. Rob Lynch conjures an 8×10 sketch of the sisters on 100% cotton watercolor paper, then guides you step by step as you line it with a brush pen and bring it to life with water-based inks. All materials are provided and no experience is necessary, so no soul-selling required. Sip a cider (mine will be Salem, obviously) and watch three witches appear by your own hand. Pure hocus pocus, total focus.

Create A Charcuterie Accessory Set with Hestia and EOS Designs at 6:00 PM
Hestia Creations and EOS Designs Studio are brewing up a girls’ night with charm to spare. Wire wrap and bead two serving utensils, a cheese knife, appetizer spoon, or fork, until they look less like flatware and more like wands for entertaining. Then paint a matching set of hors d’oeuvre bowls worthy of a coven’s potluck. You pick the colors, beads, and designs, so the whole set is spellbound to your style. No crafting experience necessary. Reservations are required at $60 per person, and we brie-lieve this one is grate.

Members and tarot class registrants are free, with a $20 suggested donation otherwise. The cards say go.

Magic Hunks at 8:00 PM
The Cut is pulling off the oldest trick in the book, honeys: making shirts vanish into thin air. Australia’s Magic Hunks bring their fully interactive all-male dance revue to Gloucester, where chiseled physiques, seductive choreography, and cheeky humor work a spell built for a saucy night out. Audience participation is the main act, so your coven may supply the lovely assistant. Now you see them, now you really see them.
Cryptid Creature Cabaret at 8:00 PM
Koto in Salem becomes a habitat for the unexplained when Maxine Harrison hosts Cryptid Creature Cabaret, a drag night of cryptids, creatures, fantasy, and folklore. A diverse cast of legendary entertainers from around Massachusetts emerges from the woods with wigs nobody can explain and legs that leave witnesses speechless. Will you spot the Moth Man drawn to the stage lights? The Jersey Devil working the room? A Wendigo hungry for tips? Sightings guaranteed, no blurry photos. Expect a $15 cover at the door, so bring cash and Big(foot) energy.

Seacoast Halloween Bash at 7:00 PM
Seacoast Stilettos is stirring its annual Halloween party and costumes are highly suggested, which we translate as a binding spell. Choose your potion. The Full Bash starts with a heels dance class and professional videos of your routine, then rolls into a drink ticket, a professional photobooth, and a DJ costume party. Prefer to skip straight to the cauldron? The After Party Only starts at 8:30 PM with cocktails, mocktails, the costume contest, and the photobooth. Park the broom, strut in stilettos, and bring the hex appeal.
Karaoke Night at The Castle at 8:00 PM
ND Productions lowers the drawbridge at The Castle for a night of fun, friends, and karaoke fit for royalty. Every queen in this court gets a turn on the throne, also known as the mic, and every power ballad becomes a royal decree. Feeling bewitched? Sing something enchanting. Feeling wicked? Choose the diva anthem that summons tears on command. Off-key notes still count as casting a spell, honeys, because a curse is just a song you haven’t belted yet. Grab a drink, then claim your crown.

Van Ghost Canvas Paint Workshop at 7:00 PM
Create and Escape is haunting Granite Coast Brewing with a guided canvas painting that turns a masterpiece into the Starry Fright. Channel a Van Ghost who, unlike the original, still has both ears. Keep yours where they are, too. Your ticket includes the project plus a beer or hard seltzer (21+) or a non-alcoholic beverage, so there’s spirit in the glass and spirit on the canvas. Mine’s a date with my GCB boo, Seraphine. No experience needed, just a brush and a ghost of a chance.
Live Music: Vices inc, Stella Starfox, Wisterio, and Melted at 8:00 PM
Bit Bar in Salem is brewing a four-band potion, and every ingredient is listed on the label. Start with a handful of Vices inc, toss in one Stella Starfox, sprinkle generously with Wisterio, then crank up the heat until everything is Melted. Double, double, toil and trouble, with the amps causing most of the trouble. Grab a drink, find your spot near the cauldron, and let the riffs do the hexing. It’s 21+ with a $10 entry fee, which is a steal for a spell this strong. Rock on, warlocks.

Hear Her Voice – Featuring Lucy Kaplansky, Patty Larkin, and Heather Maloney at 6:00 PM
The Cabot is answering a siren song with Hear Her Voice, a spotlight series amplifying the magic of women in music. For the first time, three generations of powerhouse singer-songwriters form a trio for one night only. Lucy Kaplansky casts her crafted folk narratives, Patty Larkin works her innovative guitar like a wand, and Heather Maloney’s powerful vocals do the rest of the enchanting. Expect traded songs, woven harmonies, and stories that hold the room spellbound. Tickets run $39.50 to $69.00. Hear her, honeys, and you’ll fall under her spell.
Consider this your spellbook, honeys. Ten incantations, zero side effects. We tested every single one ourselves and only turned one of us into a toad. Temporarily. Mostly.
Hex or charm? Both. Around seven(ish). Obviously. Seven(ish) is the real witching hour, honeys. That’s just some of what’s sevening this week. The full lineup lives on the calendar, and it’s the whole Essex County coven and beyond. CC members, got something sevening? Submit a member marketing request and we’ll work a little magic on it. We see you.
Not on the newsletter yet? Witch, please. Fix that. It’s the one spell worth casting every week. And follow us on the socials, @creativecollectivema and @creativecollectiveexplores, both, every week, no exceptions.
Until next week, Essex County. The wands are up, the spells are cast, and Halloween is close enough to hex. Stay sevening. You know where to find us. We’re everywhere, as if by magic.
– (unforever) yeong and the (s)evening shift, out. Brooms up, honeys. And poof, we’re gone. Or are we?
