The heart of downtown Salem is about to burst with creativity as Artists’ Row unveils an exciting new season of makers, workshops, and artistic experiences. Located at 24 New Derby Street, this City-sponsored art space is kicking off its 2025 season with a special opening weekend market and hands-on artmaking workshops on Saturday, May 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
New Creative Voices Join the Row
This spring, Salem’s creative incubator will welcome an entirely new array of artists and artisans. Visitors can explore innovative maker spaces and storefronts showcasing diverse artistic disciplines while experiencing live demonstrations and finding one-of-a-kind handcrafted gifts.
Special Opening Day Workshops
The kick-off event features two hands-on workshops that invite community participation:
MiraMar Block Print Tea Towel Workshop (10:00am-3:00pm)
Discover the art of printmaking by creating your own handprinted tea towels. Participants will learn the complete process from design conception to print production, carving a linoleum stamp and pressing it onto cotton tea towels to take home. Pre-registration is required for this workshop.
“Hissstory” Community Art Project (3:00-5:00pm)
Join lead artists Claudia Paraschiv and Linda Mullen for a free community art experience celebrating the Year of the Snake. Participants will craft snake segments using the city’s repurposed event banners, adding their personal artistic flair. The completed project will be displayed downtown during the 2025 Salem Arts Festival.
Meet the 2025 Artists’ Row Makers
The new season introduces an exciting mix of creative enterprises:
Moon Base One
An all-ages community space focused on hosting local musicians, artists, and events. The venue provides consistent programming that is accessible to all community members while supporting the artist economy through local vendor partnerships.
North Shore Glass School
Offering expert-led lessons in fused glass, stained glass, flameworking, and glassblowing for all skill levels. Their new location features classes and a retail store selling unique handcrafted glass pieces.
MiraMar Print Lab
Founded by artist duo Sammia Atoui and Adrian Rodriguez, this printmaking studio creates limited edition fine art inspired by New England’s coastal marinas, monsters, and myths. Beyond their own creations, they offer classes in printmaking, drawing, and watercolor for all experience levels.
Saboteuse Bootmaking
Salem’s 2025 Public Artist in Residence, Sarah Madeleine T. Guerin, is a French-American bootmaker, artist, scholar, and educator. Her practice connects Massachusetts’ shoemaking history with contemporary art, exploring how creativity might influence handmade footwear’s future. She will hold monthly talks at her studio on “Ten Footers History & Living Traditions.”
The Lobster Shanty
A Salem institution since the 1970s, this beloved dive bar serves quality comfort food, fresh seafood, and scratch-made ingredients in Derby Square.
