Sevenings: About Last Week Edition
Sevening (v.) — the act of showing up after seven(ish) for your people, your community, and honestly yourself. Where the weird, wild, wonderful, and worth showing up for things happen. Essex County has been doing it forever. We’ve been covering it since last week. And the first. It’s a whole thing. Catch up with our About Time Edition if you’re just joining us.
Oh hey there, Essex County. Did you get your ‘Sevenings’ on last week? Ready for more?
Oh you thought we were a one time thing? Well, hate to burst your bubble (or not), but (unforever) yeong and the (s)evening shift has already clocked in. Per and the (s)evening shift are not going anywhere. Except everywhere. We def got our ‘Sevenings’ on last week. Essex County delivered and so did we. Last week’s lineup had something for everyone — and we mean everyone. Trivia. Karaoke. Drag. Burlesque. Speed dating. A Sinatra speakeasy. Comedy. Theatre. Meditation. That’s the county we live in. That’s the county we cover. And just us. Just us covering it for you. Essex County is ‘sevening’ in every direction and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Speaking of which — this week’s ‘sevening’ starts now.

Silent Book Club at 6:00 PM
Good news: They finally made a social event where you don’t have to be social or perform humanity. Took long enough. Copper Dog Books and The Castle are hosting a silent book club — just you, your book, snacks, and drinks (chocolate milkshake weather). Think of it as a group hang where the group respects your personal bubble. A social event for people who love people — just, you know, quietly. From a reasonable distance. Mind your business accordingly. We don’t want to talk about it, except we do because it is totally ‘sevening’.

3 More Scoops of Joy at 7:00 PM
No one ever said you can’t have your ice cream and eat it too. A Registered Dietitian walks into Whimsy’s Sweet Life and says “actually, you should eat more of this” — and somehow THAT’S mindfulness, wellness and self-care? Come get scientific and philosophical as you dismantle your ice cream guilt one scoop at a time with why did you pick butter crunch (my fave) asked in complete seriousness by a credentialed professional. Salem has been holding space for complicated desires since 1692, honey. The ice cream isn’t going to judge you.

Jaws: Members-Only Free Screening Party at 7:00 PM
Dun dun. Dun dun. Dun dun dun dun dun dun. Get outta the water and into the theatre. The Cabot has been screening Jaws for over ten years because summer doesn’t officially start until someone reminds you the ocean is trying to kill you. Something is in the water in Beverly and it’s serving Jaws cocktails, free popcorn, gelato cart, plus trivia, and an oversized shark photo op. Giant shark mouth. You’re getting in it. End of discussion. Members only. Log in first. Non-members, you know what to do. Or don’t. The water’s fine. Dun dun.
Stand Up Stick Up at 7:30 PM
Leave it to the Lynn Music Foundation to put a comedy show in a former bank vault and make the punchline become the venue. Laughs are the new currency now. Pay up. A literal bank vault — thick walls, no escape — that used to hold people’s money and now holds considerably more interest. Shivani Davé headlines a lineup of comics who will rob you of your composure and leave you with nothing but laugh lines and the best ROI. What happens in the vault — well. We’ll all be talking about it anyway.

Sip N Knit Drop-In Crafting at 6:00 PM
Someone at Granite Coast Brewing looked at a taproom full of craft beer and said “you know what this needs? Yarn.” Correct and we’re not even going to try to explain why. Get to know Stacie, overseer of the fiber arts situation, wherever you are on your fiber journey, she’s got you. The puns about “knit-picking” your beer are free and unavoidable. BYO gear, show up, unravel — the yarn and the week both. Drop in whenever. Leave whenever. No commitment required. It’s a date. Don’t forget about my GCB boo — Seraphine.
Tiki Under the Beech Tree at 7:00 PM
There is a 300-year-old beech tree in Peabody. It has witnessed wars, revolutions, and the entire foolish, silly, and magnificent arc of human civilization without complaint. This Friday it will witness people do the hula with frozen cocktails and it has earned this. The Bell Inn & Tavern’s beer garden is getting a full luau glow up — frozen cocktails, island-inspired food, outdoor games, and DJ Scottie Mac all night. Patio season has arrived wearing a coconut bra, grass skirt, and a lei. The tree agrees. Probably. Maybe.
Kayak & Sail Spring Fling Fundraiser at 7:00 PM
Shocking update: Lynn is literally on the water. LIKE, LITERALLY. Has been. This whole time. Wet. Nautical. Wavy. Completely ignored by most of its own residents — a remarkable collective civic achievement. The Lynn Music Foundation is throwing open the Vault Theatre for live music, community energy, and This Day in History — hope they play Years of Wear and Tear! All supporting Kayak & Sail, been out here changing Lynn from the water up since 2021. Yup. The water that’s been right there this whole time. Essex County, it’s time to get wet.

K-Pop Takedown: Demon Hunters x KATSEYE at 7:00 PM
The tweens are ready. You are not. Or are you? Firehouse Center for the Arts wants to find out at K-Pop Takedown with a live DJ, hype MC, K-pop dancers, and a dance floor that don’t quit. Serving kids and tweens who already know all the moves — and the parents who join in despite themselves. You know who you are. It’s the most fun you’ll have losing a dance battle to a ten-year-old. Your children will remember. They’ll bring it up at Thanksgiving. Now give us your best ‘Hunter’ pose. No pressure. All pressure.
Vampire Lounge at 8:00 PM
The Salem Vampires are coming out. Dare you? A vampire nightclub inside a Tipsy Cowboy — either the most ironic venue choice imaginable or a genius act so advanced we can’t perceive it yet. That’s not a contradiction — that’s DESTINY. VampFangs Vampire Lounge hits different — Resident Vampire DJs Changeling & Kuro, actual vampires, goth, dark, danceable. Dress like you know what you walked into. And sink your teeth into the biggest pretzel ever. Vampires need snacks too. Salem ‘sevening’, done right. Follow the night where it leads. Unless it’s into the light. Not (unforever) yeong recommended.

Jazz Sundays at 5:00 PM
Follow the red light down the alley. Yes, that one. No, keep going. Stop. Dire Wolf Tavern brings live jazz to Hallowed Ground — a speakeasy that serves as a cure for the Sunday Scaries, the Monday Blues, and the general existential condition of being a person. Sit down. Sit anywhere. Don’t overthink it. Minimum effort, maximum Sunday, especially with the sloe ride. Something starts happening to your Sunday ‘sevening’. Like a negotiation. Music makes you an offer. The alley holds the terms. The red light is beckoning. It doesn’t ask twice.
Consider this your second helping of ‘sevening’ with a side of more where this came from and zero apologies.
