Last week, Essex County was busy becoming from a fifty-year-old diva melodrama got the big-screen treatment to a firehouse turned into a comedy stage to true crime trivia finally paid off years of documentary binging, to a walking tour let Lynn’s after-dark stories speak for themselves and more. Everything changed shape. Nothing sat still.

This week, Essex County isn’t just changing anymore. Nope. Nuh-uh. Now it’s showing us what was underneath the whole time. A coat gets its colors. A cosplay alter ego finally makes its debut. A mushroom shows off what it’s been quietly growing into. A bonsai reveals the shape that was hiding inside it from the start. A folk duo pulls back the curtain on thirty-plus years of songs. A family’s secrets come spilling out one by one. Drag bingo, plaster dinosaurs, an evening of fearless experimental paint, a comedy set behind a downtown storefront — every single one of them is an unveiling in its own way. So go ahead, Essex County. Take the cover off. See what’s been there all along.

An Evening with Marc Cohn and Shawn Colvin: Together in Concert at 8:00 PM

Get ready to walk right into Memphis, I mean, The Cabot for a night that hits all the right notes, honeys. Marc Cohn will have you reminiscing about Memphis, while Shawn Colvin proves she’s still going strong after thirty years in the business. Together, this concert is chord-dially recommended for anyone who appreciates a good ballad and an even better duet. It’s the kind of sevening where the harmonies are tight, the storytelling is sharp, and the only thing more impressive than the setlist is the sheer number of Grammys sitting backstage. There’s no need to be Jurassic about your skill level – beginners are more than welcome, and honestly, a little chaos is part of the fossil record here. By the end, you’ll have a dinosaur so good it deserves its own exhibit. T-Rex-cellent work awaits at Essex Art Center. Your inner paleontologist called; apparently it wants glitter. Now, if only I was any age from 9-13 instead of nearly extinct, then I could create plastersaurs too. Le waaah. 

Play with Your Paint Night at 5:30 PM

Um hellur! Honeys, it’s time to reveal that mysterious art supply you’ve been hoarding like a hidden treasure, because Play with Your Paint Night at Galleries at LynnArts is your stage for glorious creative indulgence. Bring your unexplored mediums, your untested tools, your “why did I buy this” purchases, and let them finally shine in a room full of fellow artists ready to experiment fearlessly. This free, informal evening is dripping with possibility, curiosity, and community, no polished perfection required. Sweep in with your supplies, sweep out with new techniques and a little bit of magic. Every artist deserves their moment of discovery – tonight, it’s yours.

It’s time to expose your most fabulous alter ego at Bit Bar‘s Cosplay Meet Up, where Comics Week becomes an excuse for full theatrical self-expression. Whether you’re serving superhero glamour or supervillain drama, this is your stage to strut your costume with confidence and flair. Games and good vibes await a room full of fellow fans ready to celebrate creativity in all its colorful, caped glory. No costume? No problem, honeys as your natural sparkle is more than enough. The occasion calls the weekly shot special as it’s ingredients remain a mystery. Exactly just what is under that cape? Step in ready to shine, and let this night remind you that every persona deserves its moment in the spotlight.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at 7:30 PM

There’s something wonderfully absurd about a musical where the plot kicks off with brothers literally selling their sibling into slavery. And you thought you had family issues. Yet Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat somehow makes it a joyful, colorful romp. North Shore Music Theatre brings Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s family classic to life with unforgettable tunes like “Any Dream Will Do” and a coat so bright it might leave you seeing stars from the front row. After the curtain call, sashay right over to Out at the North Shore, a fabulous free reception for the LGBTQIA+ community and keep the good vibes going well past curtain call. Bring the kids, bring the drama, leave the sibling grudges at home.

Misery Island Mushroom Walk at 4:30 PM

Nature has its own runway, and Great Misery Island is currently showcasing an entire collection of fungi couture. The Misery Island Mushroom Walk, hosted by Essex Heritage and led by the illustrious mycologist Jana Harris of Essex Forays, uncovers the island’s most striking mushroom varieties in all their earthy elegance. Departing from the Salem Ferry Dock, this guided stroll is less walk and more gallery opening, with every fungal find fab and appropriately oohed and aahed over. Wrap yourself in your finest outdoor layers and prepare to be dazzled by nature’s most understated, yet undeniably spectacular showstoppers. If you’re a fungi, fungal, and like me a fun pal, let’s get shroomed.

Witch City Comedy at the Cannery at 8:30 PM

Feeling cursed? Well then, come and get undone and laugh your spell off at Witch City Comedy’s takeover of The Cannery behind Starbird. Founded by Allie Del Franco, this comedy juggernaut casts roughly 250 shows a year across twenty enchanting Salem venues, and tonight’s show is bound to be a real crowd-pleaser. The air is chilled, peeps are relaxed, the jokes are sharp, and the laughs come easy. I can’t decide between the Harbour 75 or the Pink Pony Club. Maybe both have my name on them. Whether you’re a comedy connoisseur or just here for a fun night out, this show has some serious comedic charm in store. Donations encouraged, good vibes practically bewitched into every seat.

Salem Irish Film Festival: Horseshoe at 7:00 PM

So the Salem Irish Film Festival has been happening from July 16 until now. Of course you knew, didn’t you, you sevenings know-it-all. Then I guess you know that Horseshoe concludes the Salem Irish Film Festival at Cinema Salem, and this drama is anything but lucky for the four estranged siblings at its center. Returning to their crumbling family home after a death in the family, they are navigating grief, inheritance, and secrets buried deep beneath years of resentment. Winner of Best Irish First Feature at the Galway Film Fleadh, this film has already captivated audiences across Europe and the United States with its haunting beauty and emotional depth. Grab your popcorn, watch the secrets spill out one by one, and prepare for a film that lingers.
