Oh hey there, Essex County. Miss me? I know, I know, don’t answer that at once, I might get all emo, and I just did my glitter. But I missed all my honeys.
So here’s the tea. I got 86’d last week, along with the rest of the shift, on account of something called Beverly Restaurant Week. So we sent up our most fabulous asset to cover it. Beverly Arridge. Bev. She poured, she plated, she narrated the entire thing with a tray in one hand and a wink in the other, and well, Essex County, I don’t think I could have done it better myself. BUT don’t tell her I said that.
Last week, thanks to Bev, Essex County ate its heart out at Beverly Restaurant Week, caught a family screening of Puss in Boots, learned to actually make a Reel, sipped and sketched their way through a jazz soundtrack, shouted a scene into existence, tipped generously at the Nauti Burlesque Festival, got horn-sectioned by The Mavericks, returned to Middle-earth for the extended cut, sang off-key through Rock of Ages, and closed it all out crying over cat videos for a good cause. Ten days. One town. Zero regrets. Bev, if you’re reading this, thank you, the wig survived, the jeggings did not, we’re working on it.
Now I’m back, and honeys, I’ve got echoes on the brain, the haunting kind, the kind where something happens once and then keeps happening, in a cover song, in a story finally told, in a habit you pick back up, in a shape your hands remember even when your brain forgot. This week’s lineup is full of them, old melodies turning up in new places, old stories finally getting airtime, old traditions that show up right on schedule every single week. Nothing here is really new. It’s just still echoing. Let’s listen in.

August 25, 2026Ipswich Downtown Tuesdays 2026 at 6:00 PM
Some sevenings are a tradition before they even finish happening, and this is one of them. The Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce has been running this one every single week all summer, and it keeps coming back like it never left, this round with Bottles & Cans on the riverwalk. Bring the kids, bring your dancing shoes, bring absolutely nothing at all if that’s what you’ve got, because the cover charge does not exist. A band plays, the crowd shows up, and like last Tuesday it echoes right back into existence again this week.

John Gorka at 7:00 PM
Some songs get sung once and then never stop being sung again. Firehouse Center for the Arts is hosting John Gorka, whose songs have echoed through covers by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black, and Maura O’Connell, decades after he first wrote them. Eleven critically acclaimed albums deep, and the man is still touring, still writing, still getting picked up by other artists who hear something in his songs worth repeating. Tickets start at $37.50. Get quiet, get comfortable, and listen to where the echo started.

She Walked Here: Remarkable Women of Beverly Walking Tour at 6:00 PM
Some stories go quiet for centuries and then finally get their echo back. Historic Beverly is marking the city’s 400th anniversary with a new walking tour covering a seventeenth-century criminal, Revolutionary-era protestors, suffragists, a presidential feud, and a Cold War spy, all women, all Beverly, all finally getting said out loud. Tickets run five to ten dollars for four centuries of history walked in under an hour. Lace up something comfortable. These stories were always there. This is just the part where they get repeated.
Thurston Howell – A Premier Yacht Rock Spectacular! at 8:00 PM
The Cut is setting sail into 1987 with a full costumed crew doing Toto, Michael McDonald, Hall & Oates, and Steely Dan, note for note, harmony for harmony, like the whole decade got bottled and poured back out. This is a tribute act in the truest sense, an echo with a full horn section and a captain’s hat. 21+, positive ID required, no exceptions. Gloucester is about to sound exactly like 1987 for one night only. Some songs just refuse to fade out.

Salon—Fusion String Ensemble presents Enduring Echoes at 5:30 PM
Honeys, they named this one for me, practically. Salem Athenaeum is turning its garden into a concert hall for Enduring Echoes, an evening with the Fusion String Ensemble performing the melodies that followed you out of a movie theater and into your own playlist without you even clocking it, Elgar to Lady Gaga, concert hall to silver screen. Twenty dollars, free for members. Bring a lawn chair. This is the whole theme of the week, in program form, performed live.
Summer | Adult Claymaking at 6:00 PM
Salem YMCA is offering a beginner-friendly handbuilding class for the 18-and-up crowd, working pinch, coil, and slab techniques before moving into decoration and glazing, all off the wheel, no experience required. Your hands learn a shape once and then just keep remembering it, session after session, piece after piece, echoing the same motion until it becomes muscle memory. You leave with clay under your nails and something you actually made twice, once in the moment, once in the habit.

Esoteric Lecture: “The Devil’s Work” at 6:00 PM
Some ideas refuse to stay buried, they just keep resurfacing in a new tradition, a new decade, a new robe. The Satanic Temple is hosting artist and author Jake Kobrin for a lecture tracing deliberate transgression across Gnosticism, Tantra, Thelema, chaos magick, and the left-hand path, the same rebellious impulse echoing forward through centuries of esoteric tradition, orthodoxy be damned. Complimentary charcuterie and refreshments included, because even rebellion deserves a decent spread. Come for the history, stay for the theory that breaking the rules has been the real engine of spiritual innovation all along. Hmmm, some echoes are older than we think.
Nocturne Book Club with Bill Crisafi: The Glam Reaper’s Guide to Slaying at 7:00 PM
Nocturne is welcoming Salem-born artist Bill Crisafi for an intimate, wickedly funny evening celebrating his new book, all camp, all self-love, all telling your inner demons to kindly perish. Only twenty-five tickets at twenty-five dollars apiece, light refreshments included. The whole point of the book is repetition, saying the affirmation again, killing the negative self-talk again, until the kinder voice is the one that echoes loudest. Come for the book, stay for the practice. Some habits are worth building on purpose.
Lemon Blossom Plaque at 6:00 PM
Granite Coast Brewing is trading the taps for a paintbrush this time, with a citrus-inspired DIY plaque workshop, ticket includes materials and a beverage. You make one, sure, but you’re really making a keepsake designed to keep coming back to you, on a wall, by a door, catching your eye every day after tonight is long over. Bright, zesty, low pressure, high payoff. Bring a friend, bring your steadiest hand, and make something built to echo long past the sevening you made it.

August 30, 2026Kaiju Fest: Godzilla 2000 at 7:30 PM
Um hellur! Cinema Salem caps off the Kaiju Fest weekend with Godzilla 2000, a UFO, an alien monster, and one furious heat beam standing between humankind and total catastrophe. It’s a three-way brawl for the ages, and county, this is the same king who’s been crashing through cities and sequels since 1954, still getting summoned back every time we need him. Bring the popcorn, bring the friend who still does the roar, and let the loudest echo of the week send you off right.
Consider this your proper encore, Essex County, one echo after another, right on cue.
